The Devereux School

While most children and adolescents achieve academic success in a traditional educational environment, some struggle with with mental health, intellectual/developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges, which require a more tailored learning environment. At Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Florida, we understand that a proper education is the key in empowering children with these challenges. The Devereux School firmly believes that all students have the ability to achieve academic success.

Located at the Viera Campus, the Devereux School specializes in supporting and educating children with these particular challenges, assisting them to return home and successfully continue their education in their public school. The Devereux School provides an accredited K-12 education, in conjunction with a vast array of therapeutic services offered at the Viera Campus. Our program is unique among other schools in that it is accredited by AdvancED™ and meets standards for over sixty school districts across the United States. All of our teachers are certified in their respective instructional subject areas, as well as Exceptional Student Education (ESE). Each classroom is equipped with SMART Boards and the latest technology.

The Devereux School program is designed to advance each student’s academic growth while providing a positive school experience. Our individualized curriculum and low teacher-to-student ratio allows our students to succeed academically. Teachers are provided with daily support from the student’s therapist, behavior analyst and direct service providers, helping the student learn, adapt and overcome his or her challenges in the classroom.  Many of our students have achieved academic gains of reading at two grade levels ahead of where they started in our program, in just a period of a few months. Furthermore, each student receives the appropriate therapeutic support to address behavioral issues occurring in academic settings.

We have had the privilege to make a meaningful impact to the lives of hundreds of youth over the course of the last 30 plus years in Florida, and over 100 years at Devereux nationally.  Devereux Florida has worked in partnership with various state agencies, school districts, educational consultants and advocates.

Title IX Policy and Procedures

What is Title IX?Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct, which includes both sexual harassment including, but not limited to, sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment. This applies to academic, educational, athletic and residential programs.

What is Different? The new Title IX regulation holds schools accountable for failure to respond equitably and promptly to sexual misconduct incidents and ensures a more reliable adjudication process that is fair to all students. The Final Regulations specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination. They further specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination.
