A Message from Our Executive Director
As we reflect back on our 100 years of existence as an organization and our
25 years in Florida, it is apparent how each and every one of our staff play a
vital role in making sure we continue to provide high quality care and support
to over 5,000 children and families each day. 100 years is a very long time.
Very few can lay claim to that kind of longevity. What drove Helena
Devereux to start working with children in need is the same passion shared
by the good people working in each of our programs today. I am so thankful
to be a part of a team that is truly committed to bringing out the best in all of
the individuals we serve.
In this special edition of our newsletter, I would like to highlight a few team members who have
been honored over the past year. I look forward to celebrating many more with you
throughout the year.
Steven J. Murphy Executive Director, Devereux Florida
Devereux Florida Team Members Honored
No matter what the situation, the Devereux Florida staff strive to help children and families in need. Devereux Florida is proud of all our team members. We would also like to recognize the following staff for their achievements:
Direct Care Professional Cedrick Brooks has been nominated for Devereux Florida’s
“Support Staff of the Year Award” by his peers. Known as “Mr. Tone” to staff and clients for
his trademark charisma and charm, Cedrick helps facilitate a calm, tranquil environment and
serves clients with dedication, compassion and team spirit.
Case Manager Helen Jessie has been nominated for Devereux Florida’s CMO award for her
positive attitude and ability to build productive relationships with the children she serves. She
has continued to shine in her new role as an adoption case manager, helping match children
with the forever families they deserve.
Family Care Counselor Carlotta Cofield has been recognized for her “can-do” attitude,
perseverance and unwavering dedication to the children she serves. To further enhance her
understanding of the field, Carlotta is taking professional development courses in addition to
her work responsibilities and has maintained higher than a 3.0 GPA.
The Florida Alliance for Direct Support Professionals recognized Devereux Florida team
member Mike Hamilton for his work with children who have been the victims of severe abuse
and neglect. Known for his kind, gentle way with children, Mike has developed a wide range of
programs to help them heal from a campus ministry and bible study to sports activities to
monthly talent shows that help build kids’ confidence and sense of community.
Direct Care Professional Marjorie Williams received the Board of Trustees’ Culture of Caring
Award for outstanding direct care professionals. Throughout her eight years of service at our
Orlando Campus, Marjorie has helped children and adolescents feel loved and cared for by creating
a home away from home for each individual.
Devereux Kids Program Manager Malveria “Mal” Carter recently received the 2013 Devereux
Supervisory Excellence Award for Devereux Florida from Bob Kreider, President and CEO of
the Devereux Foundation. Nominated by her team this award recognizes Mal’s commitment to
Devereux’s core values, particularly her success in fostering the personal and professional
growth of her team. Other finalist include Cocoa Group Home Program Manager Amy Doles
