People are FLIPPING over FLIP IT!

FLIP IT® is four supportive steps to help young children (ages 3-8) learn about their feelings, gain self-control and reduce challenging behavior. The four steps are embodied in the FLIP IT® mnemonic which stands for F - Feelings, L - Limits, I - Inquiries, P - Prompts. Children who are frequently "FLIPPED" become emotionally aware problem-solvers who develop healthy coping skills.

Letter from the director!

Do the years keep going by faster, or is it just me? I feels like it was just weeks ago that I was thinking about last year’s fall newsletter and what sentiments I wanted to share. Year after year I find it is a similar theme... where did the more relaxed pace of summer go and how did our work schedules get so busy yet again?

This fall is no different than past years. The Devereux Center for Resilient Children team is as busy as ever working on exciting projects that will result in resources to support families and professionals promote children’s resilience. Balancing multiple projects with a small team requires dedication and commitment, for sure. And, it also requires that we practice what we preach and be RESILIENT.

FLIP IT™ Book - Coming Soon

To be released next month, FLIP IT will address challenging behaviors in a positive manner with four supportive steps. Children will learn to identify their feelings and gain self-control, which helps increase their resiliency. This guide walks adults through the four FLIP IT steps in an easy-to-read format, teaching new ways to respond to children's behavior. DCRC and Child Welfare: Grant Awarded

DCRC is very excited about the opportunity to work with SCAN in Fort Wayne, Indiana to promote resilience for children involved in the child welfare system. To learn more about this work, click here to see the article.

Why is this so hard for you right now?

This is one of the questions that came to my mind as I sat watching the 3-5 year old children and their teachers in the classroom I was observing. The children were struggling to "try different ways to solve their problems"; "control his/her anger"; "show patience"; and "calm himself/herself down when upset" (all items from the DECA). The Devereux Center for Resilient Children is leading an exciting social and emotional learning (SEL) initiative in the Allentown, PA School District. This project involves more than 12,000 students in 19 schools. The goal of the program is to promote the student’s social and emotional competencies to enhance their success in school and life. After months of planning, the project is underway. Elementary teachers in grades preK-2nd grade have been fully trained and are now implementing the PATHS program. Middle school teachers are participating in online trainings and soon begin implementing the Second Step program in grades 6-8. In addition to facilitating and coordinating this initiative, DCRC is leading the research and evaluation component and is collaborating with the school district to ensure ongoing support of the project. This exciting opportunity will allow DCRC to contribute to the field of social and emotional learning and speak to school districts across the country that are looking for guidance and support in district-wide adoptions of SEL programs. More to come as the project continues!

DECA Program for Preschool Trainings

DECA Program Implementation Training (Preschool)

  • March 14-15, 2012 in St. Louis

This two day training prepares participants to implement a strength-based assessment and planning system to promote preschoolers’ resilience and social and emotional health.  Participants gain a thorough understanding and appreciation for the need to strengthen young children’s social and emotional health as well as the tools to effectively implement strategies in their classroom and in the children’s homes that will promote resilience.

4-Hour DECA-C (Clinical) Webinar Training (Preschool) – Delivered over 2 sessions. Both sessions required.

  • March 21 and March 28, 2012
  • September 20 and September 27, 2012

Presented by the author, Paul LeBuffe, this 4 hour webinar training is designed for mental health professionals, social workers, and other child serving professionals who work with children already identified as having challenging behaviors.  Participants learn how to administer and interpret the DECA-C assessment results as well as how to effectively incorporate the assessment results into a behavior plan.

 

DECA Program for Infants and Toddlers Trainings

DECA for Infants and Toddlers Implementation Training (Infant/Toddler)

  • April 23-24, 2012 in Covington, KY (Suburb of Cincinnati, OH)
  • October 25-26, 2012 in St. Louis, MO

This two day training prepares participants to implement a strength-based assessment and planning system to promote resilience and social and emotional health of infants and toddlers.  Participants gain a thorough understanding for the need to strengthen infant and toddler social and emotional health as well as the tools to effectively assess and implement strategies in the environments where these children are being cared for both inside and outside of the home. Promoting resilience of the caregiver will also be discussed.

MORE Resilience Building Strategies for the Home and Caregiving Settings

  • April 25, 2012 in Covington, KY (Suburb of Cincinnati, OH)

A day with a focus on family and music to promote resilience in infants and toddlers!  This one day training is designed for both the new and seasoned DECA user who wants additional planning ideas for their center-based and/or home-based work with Infants, Toddlers, and their families.  This session will start by taking an in-depth look at family partnerships, with a focus on the parent conference as the starting point for a DECA planning process that is based on shared decision-making.  Additional social and emotional strategies specific to the home environment will be discussed.  This session will then take a closer look at specific ways to use music that can promote initiative, attachment, and self-regulation in both center and home-based settings.  Each participant of the training will receive the Beautiful Baby, Wonderful Child CD, and participants will leave the training knowing how to integrate the songs and related activities into their work with Infants, Toddlers, and Families.

 

DECA Birth Through Five Trainings

DECA Program Birth to Five Implementation Training

  • June 18-19, 2012 in Westminster, CO (suburb of Denver)

Promoting resilience through the years!  This two day training prepares participants to implement both the DECA for Infants and Toddlers Program and the DECA Program for Preschoolers.  Participants will leave this training with the ability to effectively use the DECA Preschool and DECA for Infants and Toddlers Program to effectively assess and plan for the classroom and caregiving environments, for individual children, as well as for the adults who care for them.

DECA Program Birth to Five Local Program Mentor Training

  • June 20-22, 2012 in Westminster, CO (suburb of Denver)

Take your DECA skills to the MENTOR level!  As more programs are looking to use the continuum of DECA Program resources for children birth through five, we are now offering a 3-Day Local Program Mentor training on both the DECA Program for Infants and Toddlers and the DECA Program for Preschoolers.  A prerequisite to attend the 3 Day Birth to Five Local Program Mentor training is attendance at a two day implementation training on the DECA Program OR DECA for Infants and Toddlers Program delivered by a Certified Trainer.  If new to the DECA/DECA-I/T Program, a participant can also meet the prerequisite by attending the 2-Day DECA Birth Through Five Training being offered on June 18-19, 2011.  Participants will leave the Local Program Mentor Training prepared to offer workshops and technical assistance on both the DECA for Infants and Toddlers and the DECA Program for Preschoolers to their staff. 

 

Adult and Child Resilience Training

Building Your Bounce, Building Their Bounce: Effective Strategies for Promoting the Social-Emotional Health and Resilience  of Children and the Adults Who Care for Them

  • March 1-2, 2012 in San Antonio, TX

Presented by the Author, Nefertiti Bruce, this training is designed for any adult in the early care and education field who wants to be inspired, motivated, and encouraged within the important context of caring for young children.  Day one of this training focuses on effective strategies for promoting the social-emotional health and resilience of adults while day two focuses on effective strategies for promoting the social and emotional heath and resilience of children in the classroom.  Join us for one or both days of this exciting training event!

 

Train-The-Trainer Sessions

Facing the Challenge:  Helping Teachers Better Work with Children With Challenging Behavior Train-The-Trainer Session (Preschool)

  • October 10-12, 2012  in Villanova, PA (Suburb of Philadelphia)

Presented by the Authors, Barbara Kaiser and Karen Cairone, this training is an intensive, interactive 2.5 day session delving more deeply into the understanding of, prevention of, and planned responds to challenging behaviors in young children.  At the end of this session, participants are prepared to deliver trainings of varying lengths on challenging behaviors as well as to customize training modules and create their own workshops that meet the particular needs of their audiences.  This training session is co-led by best-selling author Barbara Kaiser and Devereux National Trainers and highlights the use of Facing the Challenge and Classroom Moments, DVD resources that capture footage of early childhood educators at work with children who display challenging behaviors.

FLIP IT: Transforming Challenging Behaviors Train-the-Trainer Session (Preschool and beyond!)

  • May 7-8, 2012 in Nashville, TN 
  • September 27-28, 2012 in Tempe, AZ

School Age DESSA Training

4-Hour Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) Webinar Training

  • February 8 and February 15, 2012
  • October 23 and October 30, 2012

Presented by the Author, Paul LeBuffe, this webinar will train participants to utilize the recently published Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) Comprehensive System for children Kindergarten through 8th grade. The system includes the DESSA-mini a universal screening and progress monitoring tool, and the DESSA, an assessment of eight key social and emotional competencies.  The use of the system in screening, assessing, promoting and evaluating social-emotional competencies will be the focus of this webinar.  In addition, the use of the DESSA Comprehensive System in promoting parent-professional collaboration will be highlighted.
