Devereux New York - Millwood Learning Center
Devereux Millwood Learning Center (DMLC) provides an extended year, full day, intensive educational and behavioral intervention based on Applied Behavior Analysis to children with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. The students served by the school present with a range of severity levels and each receives individualized intervention based on his or her needs. A behavioral assessment of developmental functioning, profiles of strengths and weaknesses, and levels of adaptive skills inform and guide these programs. Instructional staff participates in intensive and ongoing training and is held directly accountable for the child's learning. This is accomplished through ongoing data collection and intensive professional supervision. Children's progress is evaluated daily through the systematic collection of performance data.
In the beginning...
Devereux was founded in 1912 by Helena Devereux and is a national private not-for-profit human service organization. The mission of Devereux is to provide high quality human services to children, adults and families with special needs due to a range of behavioral, psychological, intellectual, or neurological impairments. Services are provided in a caring and humane way to foster human potential and to contribute to the individual’s health, social and psychological and educational well being. Devereux has grown considerably since its 1912 inception and has active programs in 14 states and the District of Columbia. The Devereux Millwood Learning Center is a satellite of Devereux, Red Hook. The Red Hook program began its operations in 1987 with residential and day school settings for children, and adult day habilitation programs and group homes. The treatment philosophy currently embodied by these programs has changed little from the values initially put forth by its founder, Helena Devereux. Ms. Devereux advanced the concepts of individualized teaching and multidisciplinary team interventions long before they had been accepted as common practice. From the beginning she was committed to providing positive and rewarding learning experiences to children within a warm, nurturing environment. Her values are embodied in the mission of the Devereux Millwood Learning Center.
The Foundation for Educating Children with Autism Inc. (FECA) began formal collaboration with Devereux in 1994 to develop the Devereux Millwood Learning Center. FECA was founded in 1994, by a group of eight families, for the purpose of facilitating the development of behavioral programs for children with autism. FECA board members come from diverse backgrounds and each actively contributes to the mission and work of this organization. FECA is incorporated as a non-profit educational foundation with a separate Board of Directors and a Professional Advisory Board of individuals from the autism community. Beyond the creation of programs to serve children with autism, FECA continues to provide leadership and training to parents, educators and other professionals by offering an annual conference to disseminate information about Applied Behavior Analysis. Through vigorous fund raising activities FECA is able to significantly contribute towards DMLC’s annual operating budget. This contribution allows DMLC to maintain staffing ratios beyond the rates reimbursed through the New York State Education Department. The parents of children attending DMLC and personnel support FECA’s funding raising efforts by participating in scheduled events, attending informational meetings and donating time.
