The Devereux School

While many children and adolescents achieve academic success in a traditional educational environment, children with emotional and behavioral challenges often require a tailored learning environment to meet their unique needs. At Devereux Florida, we believe all students have the ability to achieve academic success.

Located at the Viera campus, the Devereux School specializes in supporting and educating children with unique challenges through onsite instruction, as well as through support with transition upon return to their home school district. The Devereux School provides an accredited K-12 education, in conjunction with a vast array of therapeutic services offered at the Viera campus. Our program is unique among other schools in that it is accredited by Cognia and meets standards for more than 60 school districts across the U.S. All teachers are certified in their respective instructional subject areas, as well as in Exceptional Student Education (ESE). Each classroom is equipped with interactive projectors and the latest technology to support academic instruction.

The Devereux School program is designed to advance each student's academic growth while providing a positive school experience. Our individualized curriculum and low teacher-to-student ratio allows our students to succeed academically. Teachers are provided with daily support from the student's therapist, behavior analyst and direct service providers, helping the student learn, adapt and overcome his or her challenges in the classroom. Many of our students have achieved academic gains of reading at two grade levels ahead of where they started in our program, in a period of just a few months. In addition, each student receives the appropriate therapeutic support to address behavioral issues occurring in academic settings.

Title IX Policy and Procedures

What is Title IX? Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct, which includes both sexual harassment including, but not limited to, sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment. This applies to academic, educational, athletic and residential programs.

What is Different? The new Title IX regulation holds schools accountable for failure to respond equitably and promptly to sexual misconduct incidents and ensures a more reliable adjudication process that is fair to all students. The Final Regulations specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX's prohibition against sex discrimination. They further specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX's prohibition against sex discrimination.
