Devereux Texas students collect toys for children in the Bahamas impacted by Hurricane Dorian

Youth at Devereux Texas launched a toy drive to benefit children in the Bahamas recovering from Hurricane Dorian in September.

In just two weeks, the students collected more than 150 stuffed animals, games and other toys to be shipped to the Bahamas.

Youth at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Texas – well aware of Hurricane Harvey’s impact two years ago on Devereux Texas’ Victoria and League City campuses – launched a toy drive to benefit children in the Bahamas recovering from Hurricane Dorian in September.

This fall, students placed collection boxes around Devereux Texas’ Victoria campus and in the community. In just two weeks, the students collected more than 150 stuffed animals, games and other toys to be shipped to the Bahamas.

“We are extremely proud of our students for leading this community service project – and our staff for rallying around their efforts,” said Devereux Texas Victoria Campus Administrator Richard Perkins. “Our youth learned about the importance of Servant Leadership and putting the needs of others first. The compassion and generosity they displayed for the children in the Bahamas was extraordinary.”

Recognizing the needs of others

For students and staff at Devereux Texas’ Victoria campus, memories of Hurricane Harvey came rushing back after learning about the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian.

Rising floodwaters from the August 2017 storm forced the evacuation of both the Victoria and League City campuses near Houston that serve the needs of more than 200 children, adolescents and adults with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences.

“Unfortunately, our students and staff are familiar with the danger and destruction of a hurricane, and were eager to lend a helping hand to our friends in the Bahamas,” explained Perkins. “Our students enjoyed seeing the donations pile up, and were filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing their actions made a positive impact on someone else’s life in their time of need.”
