Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Colorado and Texas schools were recently named 2022 Cognia “Schools of Distinction.”

Cleo Wallace Academy in Westminster, Colorado, and The Devereux School in League, City, Texas, earned the recognition based on the results of their Cognia accreditation reviews. During the 2021-2022 school year, Cognia, a global nonprofit school improvement organization, completed approximately 1,500 accreditation reviews. The two Devereux schools were among 96 schools and 38 systems in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and nine countries around the world, to obtain the distinction status.

“We want to congratulate our Colorado and Texas teams for demonstrating excellence in education,” said Devereux Vice President of Educational Services Jacalyn Auris, Ed.D. “Being awarded this designation recognizes the commitment our staff have in providing the highest quality education and ensuring our students have the tools they need to achieve success.”

Seeking accreditation, earning distinction status

Cognia members that seek accreditation participate in an evaluation process that includes the following:

  • A period of self-assessment
  • An evaluation conducted by trained external, third-party evaluators
  • An improvement phase focused on the results of the evaluation.

Once a school or system is accredited, it engages in a similar review process every six years to maintain accreditation. The number of schools and systems that earn distinction status vary from year to year. Recipients carry the designation for one year.

“Being named a ‘School of Distinction’ is an incredible honor, and we are proud and grateful for this opportunity,” said Devereux Colorado Special Education Director Carrie Foster. “Earning accreditation through Cognia gives our school recognition for achieving high standards in learning, teaching and student outcomes, and holds us accountable for providing high quality instruction and educational services. Our students are able to earn credits toward a high school diploma, and those credits are transferrable to other school programs because of our accreditation through Cognia. This is important to our students, as well as the school districts that utilize our services.”

Devereux Texas Director of Education Cindy Townsend also noted, “Earning distinction status is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and passion demonstrated by our teachers and staff each and every day. We are thrilled with the high marks we received on our accreditation, and believe it is a testament to the talent and dedication of our team, as they strive to always put our students first.”
