Devereux New York adult inspired to write ‘thank you’ rap song for essential employees

Wayne Robinson, who receives services through Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York, is using his musical talents to give thanks to the center’s front-line staff for providing the best possible care and support during COVID-19.

Robinson is enrolled in Devereux New York’s adult self-advocacy program, and was recently inspired to write a rap song to show his gratitude and appreciation for the center’s essential employees. He performed the rap during a Zoom meeting with his peers and center leadership.

“I felt like it was a good idea for me to show my support for staff because they work hard each and every day, and put their lives on the line,” Robinson said.

Devereux New York Executive Director John Lopez noted this was one of several raps Robinson created to lift the spirits of team members during the pandemic. “We are incredibly grateful to Wayne for sharing his gift and love of music, and spreading joy during these challenging times. His raps always bring smiles to the faces of our dedicated and hard-working team members who are impressed and touched by his talent and thoughtfulness.”

Finding a voice through self-advocacy

Robinson serves as president of Devereux New York’s adult self-advocacy group, which has been meeting weekly on Zoom. Members, who are all served by Devereux, discuss the challenges they face, and offer each other advice.

“Our members are finding ways to look at the bright side of this situation,” explained Devereux New York Community Outreach Coordinator Kailee McIntyre. “Each week, those in attendance share what they are grateful for, as well as what they have learned while under New York’s stay-at-home order. These individuals have always helped and supported one another, but they recognize the need to offer even more guidance and encouragement now.”

Robinson, who also is a member of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State and has performed raps at statewide events, added, “Through self-advocacy, I have learned how to speak up for myself; be strong for others; and speak up for others who can’t speak for themselves. I enjoy helping people and making a difference. I like to see people happy – and do things that help make them feel good.”
