Faces of ASCEND: Meet Devereux New York Licensed Practical Nurse Carol White

Carol White

Thanks to Devereux ASCEND, Devereux N.Y. Licensed Practical Nurse Carol White is taking classes to become a registered nurse.

“With Devereux ASCEND, I can get an education without going into debt for the rest of my life. It doesn’t matter how old you are – you can still go back to school. ASCEND will help me fulfill my goal of being a registered nurse. I’m thankful for this opportunity.”
Carol White, Devereux New York Licensed Practical Nurse

Carol White joined Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York in 2017 as a licensed practical nurse. While she loves her current role, she has always dreamed of something more.

Over the years, White considered going back to school to become a registered nurse, but one thing held her back – the cost of higher education.

“I went to college 10 years ago, and the cost is significantly higher now than it was then,” White said. “I’m an older worker. I don’t want to be paying off student loans into my 80s.”

Heading back to school

When White first learned about the Devereux ASCEND Career Accelerator Program, she signed up immediately. White is taking advantage of ASCEND’s tuition assistance benefit, which provides team members with financial assistance to help ease the burden of continuing education. Currently, White is taking classes at Columbia Green Community College.

“Things have changed a lot since I was in college,” White shared. “While it took some time to get into the swing of it, I now have a good routine and a strong support system both at work and at home.”

White encourages her colleagues to participate in Devereux ASCEND and achieve their career goals.

“All too often, I think the cost prevents people from pursuing their dreams,” White said. “If it’s something you really want to do, go for it!”
