Healthcare Heroes

Melvin Washington

Jennifer Kammeraad, Clinical manager

Center/office location: Devereux Florida – Winter Park, Florida

Length of service: August 2000

In your role, what are your main responsibilities?

I oversee Devereux Florida’s Orange outpatient program. Our team is comprised of more than 30 clinicians, advanced practice registered nurses and psychiatrists, and we provide services for more than 1,800 individuals, and their families, each year.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is helping the individuals we serve heal and empowering them to grow.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

I was told how important it is to build an amazing team to run your program.

How do you demonstrate Servant Leadership principles on a daily basis?

Although I am the manager of our large program, my approach is to offer support behind the scenes. My role is to serve our staff and ensure they have the tools and resources they need so they can focus on the important work of taking care of the individuals we serve.

What is one thing your colleagues don’t know about you?

I live with a plethora of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, fish, snakes and lizards. Some I embrace and others I do not.

Why are you a Healthcare Hero?

I don’t see myself as a hero. My job is to support the true Healthcare Heroes, the front-line workers who serve our individuals and families.

Servant Leadership Snapshot

Kyle James

Kyle James, People Operations Director

Center/office location: Devereux Pocono/Newfoundland, Pennsylvania

Length of service: March 2014

How do you embed an inclusive, Servant Leadership mindset into your daily processes?

I show up to work every day with the goal of leading by serving first. It sounds simple because it is. To me, leading is less about managing and all about serving. It creates a high level of support and trust. This helps us generate an energy in the environment that feels as if we can accomplish anything together.

How do you inspire others to embrace Servant Leadership practices?

I start by being the example. It is easy to come in and become overwhelmed with work and hyper-focused on results – forgetting about the simple things, such as putting people first. When we feel valued, we feel as if we are part of something bigger. I try to create an environment where my team feels comfortable and valued for who they are, not just what they do.

Share an example or story of how you demonstrated compassion or delivered quality customer service at your center.

In my role as People Operations director, I have the opportunity to express compassion quite often. Whether I am supporting a team member through a major life event, such as the loss of a family member, or helping them find a daycare center closer to home. Regardless of the challenges, our People Operations team, myself included, is always willing to go above and beyond to break down the barriers our employees face on a daily basis.

Devereux Arizona DCP Jermaine Stewart

Jermaine Stewart, DCP
Devereux Arizona

“Jermaine understands the partnership and collaboration that are involved in making sure students participate in their education. He reads the room, and activity, and adjusts his interactions to make sure all students are engaged. He interacts with students in a way that makes them eager to participate. His infectious smile and laughter are refreshing not only to our students, but also to his colleagues. Knowing that Jermaine is in the house is an indication that it is going to be a great day!”
