Family sponsors food truck for Devereux California staff to honor loved one
Casey Hiester grew up visiting Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health California on a regular basis to spend time with her uncle, Terry Falberg, who received services through the organization. When Terry passed away in 2022 at the age of 80, Casey and her family decided to sponsor a taco truck to honor him and thank Devereux California team members for providing Terry with the best possible care for more than 60 years. “We wanted to show our appreciation for Terry’s ‘everyday family’ — Devereux California staff and his fellow residents,” said Casey, who also served as Terry’s conservator. “Terry loved to eat. He enjoyed experiencing new flavors, and he would have been excited about the taco truck.” Devereux California Executive Director Amy Evans, M.A., LMFT, LPCC, noted, “We want to thank Casey and the rest of the Falberg family for their generosity and support. Terry lived with us for many years — almost everyone knew him. He had a larger-than-life personality and was a joy to be around. While Terry will be greatly missed, he will remain forever in our hearts.”” Remembering Terry’s love, giftsCasey says she will remember Terry’s outgoing personality, sense of humor and love of shopping. “Every time I talked to him on the phone, he would ask when I was coming to visit and if we were going shopping,” Casey shared. “He was obsessed with flashlights and batteries. If we went to a store and he saw a flashlight, he would have to have it. He also loved to tinker with things. As soon as you gave him a new remote control, he would take it apart, and the next time you visited, it would be duct-taped together. He was very curious.” Most of all, Casey says, she will remember how Terry taught their family to always be present. “He was full of love,” Casey said. “When you spent time with him, there was no planning. You had to just be in the moment. It was beautiful and truly a gift to have that type of soul in your life.” Gratitude for lifelong supportTerry was the son of Weaver E. Falberg, who served as chairman of Devereux’s national Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1991. Casey says the Falberg family is grateful to Devereux California staff for creating a safe and healthy place for Terry to live and thrive. “Terry loved living at Devereux California,” Casey noted. “The staff understood his strengths and needs, and he was given the freedom to be himself. Every time I visited, I was blown away by team members’ kindness and compassion. Our family is indebted to Devereux and appreciative of everyone there.” Learn more about Devereux California, and learn more about Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health.
