Devereux MA/RI students learn valuable life skills through participation in Rutland police 5K-9 race

Students and staff at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Massachusetts and Rhode Island laced up their sneakers recently to participate in the Rutland Police Department’s annual 5K-9 race, which benefits the department’s K-9 Foundation.

Two students hit the pavement, exercising both their bodies and their minds as they learned the power of perseverance.

“We are incredibly proud of our students, and want to thank Rutland police for inviting them to participate in this race,” said Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island Executive Director Kerry Ann Goldsmith. “There are many physical and mental health benefits of this type of activity, including improved physical fitness, strength and coordination, as well as enhanced social skills; boosted self-confidence; and increased concentration and determination.”

Building healthy habits

Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island Campus Administrator Bernadette Conneely ran the race alongside the students.

“Our individuals had a wonderful sense of pride in what they accomplished – they were absolutely glowing,” Conneely shared. “Although there were moments during the race when they were unsure of themselves, they persevered and came out on top. One of our students even won a trophy for finishing with the best time for an individual under the age of 12. Afterward, he said, ‘Wow! I’ve never won a trophy before.’ I loved sharing in their joy and excitement. This race served as a reminder of the importance of creating meaningful memories with our youth.”

Conneely says the students had so much fun, they are eager to run another race.

“Since the kids had such a wonderful time, we are launching a weekly running group on campus,” Conneely explained. “Team members with different levels of ability will train our students. Our goal is to hold a couple of races throughout the summer with a much larger group of students and staff.”
