Devereux FL partners with AMOpportunities to offer clinical training for healthcare professionals

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Florida recently teamed up with AMOpportunities (AMO) to offer clinical training for medical and physician assistant students at the organization’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Specialty Hospital on its Viera campus.

AMO is a Chicago-based company that manages clinical experiences for schools, hospitals and students (medical, nursing, physician assistants and nurse practitioners) around the world.

“We offer four-week clinical rotations for students at our hospital, which serves children and adolescents, ages 7 to 18, with significant emotional, behavioral, intellectual and developmental challenges,” said Devereux Florida Medical Director Manal Durgin, M.D., “Students participate in our monthly treatment team meetings, initial psychiatric assessments and evaluations, and visits with psychiatrists to our residential units to assess children who are in crises or need reassessment.”

Nurturing future health professionals

Dr. Durgin says partnering with AMO to provide clinical training is beneficial for the students – and for Devereux.

“This rotation exposes students to the world of behavioral health. At Devereux, we are all part of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Our goal is to build a special village for the individuals in our care that helps both them and their families. I tell our students, ‘We are not just treating the child, we are treating the family,’” Dr. Durgin explained. “The students we work with are impressive – they are fully engaged in the process, open to learning and ask important questions. When it comes time for them to start their careers, I hope they remember their experience at Devereux and consider joining our team.”

AMOpportunities Vice President of Clinical Education Ryan Palmer, Ed.D., MFA, also noted, “At the core of AMO's mission lies the commitment to fortify workforce pipelines within health systems across the U.S. Choosing to collaborate with Devereux in the endeavor to cultivate their workforce and nurture the next generation of health professionals was a natural and compelling decision. By partnering with Devereux, healthcare education students are not only gaining access to a world-class healthcare system, but also seizing the opportunity to acquire the essential education crucial for their clinical careers. Our satisfaction with this partnership knows no bounds.”

What students are saying …

Students who recently completed rotations with Devereux Florida expressed their gratitude to Dr. Durgin. Look below to read excerpts from their thank you notes.

“Getting the opportunity to learn from you, work with your team and meet the kids was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. Your compassion, level of expertise and ability to lead a team so effectively is admirable and something I hope to instill in myself as a future provider. The lessons I learned in my short time at Devereux, both textbook medicine and patient care-related, and general life lessons, are all something for which I will be forever grateful.”
Jordan, Arcadia University student

“This rotation has really opened my eyes to where I belong in medicine and where I want to take my career. I’m leaving here with a strong passion in advocating for kids with disabilities and different mental/behavioral diagnoses who really just need a good uplifting space/environment to potentially change their lives. I can see the difference you’re making in these kids each and every day, and I hope to do the same one day.”
