Devereux Arizona’s foster care program achieves ‘Together Facing the Challenge’ certification

Devereux Arizona’s foster care program recently achieved certification in “Together Facing the Challenge,” an evidence-based therapeutic foster care training model developed by Duke University.

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Arizona’s foster care program recently achieved certification in “Together Facing the Challenge” (TFTC), an evidence-based therapeutic foster care (TFC) training model developed by Duke University.

TFTC certification allows Devereux Arizona staff to provide independent training and consultation to therapeutic foster parents so they can best meet the unique needs of the children, adolescents and adults in their care.

“We are thrilled to earn full certification in the TFTC model of care,” said Devereux Arizona Executive Director Yvette Jackson, LMSW, DBH. “Our therapeutic foster parents provide safe, stable and supportive homes for individuals with significant emotional and behavioral challenges. This certification allows us to offer comprehensive training on trauma-informed care, proactive parenting strategies, problem-solving techniques, and more, so our therapeutic foster parents have the tools and resources they need to build relationships with those in their care and help them thrive.”

About the TFTC model

The TFTC model includes training and consultation for TFC supervisors and therapeutic foster parents. TFTC uses a train-the trainer approach, which means that TFC administrative/supervisory personnel learn the model and are then able to train therapeutic foster parents. Program goals include:

  • Building therapeutic relationships
  • Performing and teaching cooperation skills
  • Implementing effective parenting techniques, such as communicating effectively, setting expectations, reinforcing positive behaviors and avoiding power struggles
  • Preparing youth for their future by teaching independence skills
  • Creating a positive home environment through family fun time and family meetings

“TFTC certification lasts for two years, at which time we will apply for re-certification,” explained Devereux Arizona Director of Foster Care Services Paul Davis, LCSW, BCBA, LBA. “Our hope is that adherence to this evidence-based model will allow us to better support our therapeutic foster parents and improve outcomes for the youth and adults we serve by helping them learn essential life skills, solve problems effectively and develop a positive sense of self.”
