Devereux receives 87,000 face masks, 3-D printed face shields from community supporters

Since Devereux put out a call in March for Personal Protective Equipment to help keep the organization’s front-line staff - and the individuals it serves - safe and healthy during COVID-19, supporters have donated 87,000 face masks and 3-D printed face shields.

Since Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health put out a call in March for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to help keep the organization’s front-line staff – and the individuals it serves – safe and healthy during COVID-19, families, caregivers and supporters have generously donated 87,000 hand-sewn face masks and 3-D printed face shields.

“We want to thank our Devereux family members, donors, friends and supporters who sewed face masks, created 3-D printed face shields, and donated other life-saving PPE to help protect our hard-working and dedicated essential employees,” said Devereux President and CEO Carl E. Clark II. “We had an urgent need, and it has been heartening and gratifying to see individuals and businesses come together to support our efforts, and help keep us #DevereuxStrong.

Supporting Devereux’s PPE efforts

As healthcare professionals across the U.S. faced a critical shortage of PPE, at the onset of COVID-19, Devereux supporters sprang to action. Here’s what center leadership had to say about the outpouring of support.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, Devereux Georgia’s Advisory Board, family members and friends promptly began sourcing and providing PPE for our staff, as well as the individuals we serve. We received so many donations, we were able to share them with others in need. We are thankful for our Advisory Board members, Cobb County Public Health officials and other donors for going above and beyond during this challenging time. With their unparalleled benefactions, they have undoubtedly prevented illness and saved lives.”
– Devereux Georgia Executive Director Gwen Skinner

“We are overwhelmed by the level of support we have received. Family members of the individuals we serve jumped in and provided us with hundreds of handmade face masks. Their efforts enabled us to give all of our employees and the adults in our care multiple, reusable masks. In addition, a staff member at one of our funding agencies personally sewed 21 reusable gowns to help protect our team members. The support from our families and partners makes it truly feel like we are all in this together. ”
– Devereux California Executive Director Amy Evans

Front-line staff give thanks

Week after week, as PPE donations continued to pour in, Devereux team members said they were grateful and humbled by the community’s response.

“The fact that someone took the time to make and/or donate masks to our staff and the individuals we serve was incredibly moving, and shows just how much we are valued, loved and appreciated. We are extremely grateful, and the ladies in our group home love the colors and designs of their masks. Plus, we are able to wash and wear them again, which is a great life skill to teach those in our care.”
– Devereux New Jersey Program Manager LaToya Jones

“The donated masks have been so nice. I’m thankful to have received a few face masks, which means I always have a clean one, and am ready to go to work.”
– Devereux Florida Direct Support Professional Keiona Thomas

“The donations allowed us the opportunity to focus on caring for the individuals we serve without the added stress or worry that we wouldn’t have enough PPE. I really appreciated all of the homemade masks. It made me feel valued, and that the work I do is important and worth protecting.”
– Devereux Arizona Direct Support Professional Michael Vos
