Devereux PA Children’s Services team member builds community relationships through volunteerism

As Director of Administrative Services at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Pennsylvania Children’s Services, Scott Carter, M.S.S.E., EMT, not only provides oversight of the facilities and food services divisions, and assists in coordinating special projects, but he also is committed to strengthening community relationships.

Carter partners with organizations to facilitate volunteer opportunities on campus.

“We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who have generously donated their time, expertise and hard work to complete various projects on campus,” said Carter. “The benefits and rewards have been immeasurable. Each project is carefully conceived to meet our community partner’s vision to ‘give back’ and provide meaningful enhancements to our operational spaces.”

Devereux Pennsylvania Children’s Services Executive Director Patricia Hillis-Clark, Psy.D., noted, “By expertly facilitating volunteer opportunities, Scott is building community connections and helping to further beautify our campus and support those we serve. He is a servant leader who goes above and beyond to conceptualize projects and assist individuals and organizations in connecting with Devereux to engage in community service activities.”

Eagle Scout projects

Recently, Carter supported a local Eagle Scout in installing a walkway, patio and memorial bench outside of the Devereux Pennsylvania Children’s Behavioral Health Center in Malvern. The patio features bricks etched with the names of Devereux Pennsylvania Children’s Services’ team members who have passed away, as well as uplifting messages.

“The planning, design and construction of this impactful project took approximately nine months from beginning to end,” Carter explained. “Eagle Scouts have completed numerous service projects with us over the years. The primary purposes of an Eagle Scout project are to learn, build leadership skills and strengthen the community. Projects have included, the construction of outdoor workout stations, an obstacle course and bicycle/cross country trails at our Brandywine campus. At our Mapleton campus, Eagle Scouts have refurbished our tennis and basketball courts, and installed a miniature golf course and raised garden beds.”

Fostering community connections

In addition to the Eagle Scouts, Carter has partnered with other organizations seeking to complete community service projects and support Devereux.

“The projects have been far-reaching and have included program renovations; the installation of campus recreational equipment, such as playgrounds, a fitness center, basketball court and pavilion; zoo program enhancements; and a comprehensive hydroponic garden center,” Carter shared. “These projects provide extraordinary opportunities to not only improve our environments of care, but also establish and foster relationships throughout our communities. Each of these remarkable gifts has raised awareness, provided opportunities for community understanding of the vast array of services that form and drive our treatment models, and support our belief and desire to continually improve the lives of those we serve.”
