Safe & Positive Approaches
The Supervision of Safe & Positive Approaches
The Supervision of Safe & Positive Approaches is an evidence‐based supervisory training program designed for lead
staff, first‐line supervisors and middle managers who are responsible for
direct care/direct support staff and their implementation of the performance
responsibilities trained in the Safe & Positive Approaches® program.
Its purpose is to enable supervisors to: (a) understand their roles and
responsibilities and legal implications; (b) heighten their knowledge and skill
level of Safe & Positive Approaches® concepts and techniques; (c)
provide supportive, behavioral supervision; and (d) promote staff’s use,
mastery and retention of Safe & Positive Approaches® concepts and
skills that reduce and eliminate the use of restraints.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify issues that impact their
supervisory roles and responsibilities in the prevention and intervention of
crisis.
- Participants will be able to describe elements of a culturally
competent and trauma-informed environment that fosters crisis prevention and
the reduction and elimination of restraints.
- Participants will be able to develop their knowledge and skills in the
concepts, guidelines and techniques trained in the Safe & Positive
Approaches® program.
- Participants will be able to demonstrate technical accuracy in their
evaluation of staff’s performance of Safe & Positive Approaches®
skills and techniques.
- Participants will be able to implement supportive supervisory
strategies for providing performance monitoring and a 7-step process for
delivering feedback to their staff.
- Participants will be able to facilitate a staff debriefing process in
follow-up of crisis situations.
