How do you embed an inclusive, Servant Leadership mindset into your daily processes?

I try to utilize one, if not all, of the Seven Pillars of Servant Leadership daily. When I do, I feel as though it shines through in the care of our individuals, and also serves as a great training tool for our staff. For our individuals, the pillars can be used at any time because each of our youth has different needs and wants.

How do you inspire others to embrace Servant Leadership practices?

I do my best to say what I mean, and mean what I say when it comes to the services we provide. When I use Servant Leadership principles, and it results in improved outcomes for our individuals, others realize they should use the principles too.

Share an example or story of how you demonstrated compassion or delivered quality customer service at your center.

Recently, we had an individual enrolled in our Brief Intervention Program/Assessment and Intervention Center who was presenting with challenging behaviors. We spent a great deal of time trying to help him manage his behaviors more effectively. In speaking with him, I used the Seven Pillars of Servant Leadership, and he responded in ways that prove the pillars work. At times, I needed to be a skilled communicator and great listener. At other times, I needed to be compassionate, take quick action or consider the greater good for his care and the well-being of our staff and program. After a long conversation with his grandmother, during which I listened closely to what she said and demonstrated compassion, she thanked me and praised the program. Again, I realized the pillars were proof that Devereux is doing something great. As long as we continue to practice and use these pillars, we will continue to see great outcomes for the individuals we serve.
