Devereux Arizona Executive Director Yvette Jackson receives ‘Champion for Change’ award

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Arizona Executive Director Yvette Jackson, LMSW, DBH, recently received the “Champion for Change” award at the 2021 Let’s Get Better Together Conference, hosted by the Queer Resource Collective and the LGBTQ Integrated Health Coalition of Southern Arizona.

The annual statewide conference, which was held virtually in June, aims to “increase education, resources and understanding of health providers serving the LGBTQ community.” Devereux Arizona was a sponsor of this year’s event.

Jackson received the award for her efforts to promote LGBTQ inclusion.

“I was incredibly honored to receive the ‘Champion for Change’ award,” said Jackson. “When LGBTQ children, adolescents and adults – and their families – turn to us for help, we want them to know Devereux Arizona is a safe, welcoming and affirming place where they can receive fair and equitable care. In addition, we are committed to fostering an inclusive work environment where our LGBTQ team members can trust they will be seen, heard and fully supported.”

Creating a culture of inclusion

The “Champion for Change” award recognizes a person who has shown significant leadership in bringing advocacy and awareness into their workplace, helping to create a safe environment that respects and supports LGBTQ individuals. Note: In 2015, Jackson received the “Leadership in LGBTQ Health” award from the LGBTQ Consortium (renamed Queer Resource Collective) and the LGBTQ Integrated Health Coalition of Southern Arizona.

Jackson, who serves as a member of Devereux’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Steering Committee and co-chairs the organization’s national LGBTQ committee, has been instrumental in helping to implement changes across the nonprofit to better support LGBTQ staff, as well as the individuals and families they serve.

“By taking steps, such as displaying Safe Space stickers in our offices and work stations; installing gender-neutral restroom signs; and using LGBTQ-inclusive language in various documents, including policies, we are demonstrating our commitment to inclusion and showing our employees and those in our care that all are welcome at Devereux.”
