Devereux Colorado awarded $6,500 grant for playground equipment

Devereux Colorado was awarded a grant of more than $6,500 from GameTime, a leading manufacturer of commercial playground equipment, to help purchase a state-of-the-art playset for children with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences.

Devereux Colorado worked closely with GameTime to ensure the playset’s location on the center’s grounds is safe and meets state standards.

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Colorado was recently awarded a grant of more than $6,500 to help purchase playground equipment for children with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences.

The grant, from GameTime, a leading manufacturer of commercial playground equipment, was used to help buy a state-of-the-art playset for the nonprofit. The new playset features a double swerve slide to promote socialization; a curved balance beam to teach coordination and balance; and multiple climbing elements to help build muscles.

“I want to thank GameTime for presenting Devereux Colorado with this generous grant, which will allow the youth we serve the opportunity for both structured and unstructured play,” said Devereux Colorado Executive Director Perry May. “Due to the extreme nature of trauma that many of our individuals have experienced, it is vital that they have a chance to participate in recreational activities, such as having fun on a playground. This equipment will provide a unique way for our children and adolescents to develop their imaginations through play-time, work through peer conflicts and friendship development, and engage in positive and therapeutic activities that will benefit their overall well-being.”

Learning through play

“At Devereux Colorado, and throughout the organization, we talk a lot about the ‘power of play.’ This playground will provide a valuable opportunity for the individuals we serve to develop fine and gross motor skills, as well as social skills and problem-solving skills,” said Devereux Colorado Clinical Manager Megan Daveline, BCBA, LPC. “The younger girls and boys at our residential treatment facility, who have significant mental health and behavioral needs, as well as those with high-functioning autism, will benefit greatly from this playground.”

Construction of the new playground took place in February and was completed within a few days. Devereux Colorado worked closely with GameTime to ensure the playset’s location on the center’s grounds is safe and meets state standards.
