Devereux and CHOP co-sponsoring Sept. 21 conference on providing care for children with autism

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health is teaming up with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to co-sponsor a conference on how best to meet the developmental and behavioral healthcare needs of children with autism and other developmental disorders.

The conference – “Developmental and Behavioral Health for the Pediatric Patient: A Focus on Autism” – will be held virtually on Sept. 21.

“This is a unique opportunity for attendees to learn current best practices and practical tips from subject matter experts from Devereux and CHOP, as well as from other hospitals and organizations, regarding care for children with special needs,” said Devereux National Director of Family Engagement Amy Kelly, MBA, MNM, who is one of the conference program directors and will serve as a co-moderator. “This is the second time Devereux has collaborated with CHOP in recent years to co-sponsor a conference on developmental and behavioral health – it is a natural partnership since we both diagnose, treat and work to provide optimal outcomes for individuals experiencing these challenges.”

About the conference

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 6 children, ages 2 to 8, has a developmental, behavioral or mental health disorder. In addition, the CDC states that about 1 in 59 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Conference presenters will offer tips and resources for providing the best possible care and support for individuals with ASD and their families, as well as other developmental and behavioral health issues. Relevant COVID-19 information also will be incorporated as appropriate. Discussion topics include:

  • Adverse childhood experiences and whether they can disguise themselves as disabilities
  • Functional behavioral assessments and their application to individualized education plans and behavior support planning
  • Current research and implementation of evidence-based practices in applied settings in autism
  • Autism and its relation to gastroenterology
  • Transition planning for individuals with autism and other disabilities
  • Self-advocacy in autism

“Each presentation will offer evidence-based treatments, support management and resource suggestions, with the ultimate goal of helping children with autism and other disabilities thrive,” explained Kelly.
