Cleo Wallace Academy

Devereux Colorado’s Cleo Wallace Academy is an Approved Facility School for elementary, middle school and high school students.

Cleo Wallace Academy is licensed by the Colorado Department of Education and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and Cognia. Students are provided a unique education program to help them thrive and reach their full potential. We believe in valuing the unique differences of our students and providing a safe and caring environment for all learners, while treating each other with respect and integrity. Cleo Wallace offers in-person learning that allows our students to meet their IEP goals, and focuses on Colorado Department of Education Standards. Small class sizes (10 students per class) and a trauma-informed framework create a therapeutic learning environment for all of our students.

Cleo Wallace Academy’s instructional and support staff is comprised of highly skilled special education teachers, paraprofessionals, job coaches and clinicians.

Because of the diversity of our student population, academic instruction is individualized to meet each of our student’s needs. Students also are offered a variety of community-based instructional experiences, the goal of which is to connect lessons learned in the classroom with real-world experiences and skills. Related services, such as speech/language therapy and occupational therapy are provided as needed. Cleo Wallace Academy students also are supported by an on-site director of special education who administers academic achievement assessments, reviews Individualized Education Plans and works closely with the treatment team to help facilitate a smooth transition to the student’s home school district upon discharge.

Cleo Wallace Academy’s education programs include:

• Social Emotional Curriculum: Our curriculum is integrated with Devereux’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support system, which helps students develop social competence, resiliency, self-management and responsible decision-making skills.
• Technology: Each classroom is equipped with an interactive smartboard to enhance the classroom experience. All students are provided with a Chromebook to help make learning more robust.
• Transition Services: Supports available to help students and families plan for, and attain, postsecondary goals. Prevocational skill-building opportunities and activities include a Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES) lab and supportive job coaching.
• Academic Team: Our education staff work as members of the student’s treatment team and support each individual’s treatment plan and/or Individualized Education Plan. We provide individualized education for students in elementary through high school; classes are taught by licensed, special education teachers and paraprofessionals.
• Counseling Services: We offer each of our students an opportunity to benefit from individual and group counseling and therapy.
• Behavior Supports: An evidence-based, multi-tiered model of supports is implemented across all educational environments to maximize student success and reduce student behavior that can impede the learning process.
• Additional Services: Medication Management; Access to Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs)

Title IX Policy and Procedures

What is Title IX?Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct, which includes both sexual harassment including, but not limited to, sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment. This applies to academic, educational, athletic and residential programs.

What is Different? The new Title IX regulation holds schools accountable for failure to respond equitably and promptly to sexual misconduct incidents and ensures a more reliable adjudication process that is fair to all students. The Final Regulations specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination.
