Direct Support Professionals Week: Devereux honors its DSPs

At Devereux, direct support professionals are the backbone of our organization.

During Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Week – September 9-15 – Devereux celebrates its 3,400 DSPs, as they bring hope, healing and joy to the individuals and families in our care.

About DSP Week

Since 2008, the United States has observed “National Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week;” it is a time when hospitals, schools, healthcare providers and others recognize and thank DSPs for their vital contributions to communities across the country.

“The role of a direct support professional is both challenging and rewarding. At Devereux, our DSPs work extremely hard to improve the lives of so many individuals living with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Rhea Fernandes. “They are an inspiration, and we could not carry out our organization’s mission without them.”

DSPs share their perspectives

Look below to see what makes our DSPs tick, and find out how they feel about making a difference in the lives of so many individuals who need care, comfort and support.

“I came to Devereux 10 years ago looking for a job. I would have never guessed that it was a calling in my life. Being a DSP is both challenging and inspirational! I like being able to connect with young adults and help prepare them for the future or the next level in their lives. When you realize that success is measured by small milestones – reached one day at a time – the possibilities are endless for what each child in our care can achieve.”
— Devereux Florida Direct Care Supervisor Germel Allen

“The general welfare of each of my clients is my greatest responsibility. I live Devereux’s mission by being a good listener and providing an atmosphere of open communication, including having fun! What I like best about my job is the relationships I have developed with each individual. It has been so rewarding to help improve the quality of their lives – and to be there for them.”
— Devereux Pocono DSP Maria MacArthur

“I go out of my way to talk to the individuals we serve, and show them the extra kindness they deserve – every day. And I want them to remember that kindness on bad days, so those bad days aren’t so bad. I love to see them smile! Most of all, I want our individuals to know I care about them, so they feel they can come to me at any time for help and support.”
— Devereux California DSP and Certified Nurse Aide Enedelia Avila
