The Devereux Direct Care Training Resources center is a leading provider of training for direct care and behavioral health professionals. As part of its training curricula, Safe & Positive Approaches® is a comprehensive crisis prevention and intervention program designed to promote staff knowledge and competence in preventing, defusing and managing crisis situations. The program, developed by Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, is utilized throughout the organization’s national treatment network, as well as in more than 130 other behavioral healthcare organizations, school districts and human service settings. Consistent with best practices and empirical literature, Safe & Positive Approaches provides a continuum of intervention built upon a least restrictive philosophical approach. The program’s strong focus on positive and preventive measures aims to reduce and eliminate the use of seclusion and restraint.

Safe & Positive Approaches® Curricular components include:

Part 1 - Staff Effectiveness Training:

Presents strategies to prevent and defuse crisis situations, methods of intervening using a non-physical approach, and an examination of staff behavior and its effect on individuals served.

Part 2 - Safety Techniques Training:

Presents safe and effective techniques that help to protect and minimize the risk of injury when someone is being physically threatened or harmed, and verbal intervention alone is not successful.

Part 3 - Personal Emergency Interventions Training:

Provides staff with safe and effective control procedures used as a last-resort in emergency crisis situations when less-restrictive options are neither effective nor appropriate.

The program also offers a supervisory training resource “The Supervision of Safe & Positive Approaches.”

In addition to Safe & Positive Approaches®, Direct Care Training Resources also certifies Trainers in Supportive Behavioral Supervision and Suicide Prevention (QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer).
