History

Helena Devereux

One hundred years ago, a young Philadelphia school teacher began a historic journey driven by a vision and passion for a better way to help children in need. Following a path she alone charted, Helena T. Devereux forever changed the course of special education and treatment for individuals with learning, behavioral and emotional difficulties. Hers was a remarkable journey of hope and energetic dissatisfaction with the status quo that remains the lifeblood of Devereux today. Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health continues to shine as a beacon of hope for individuals in need and their families nationwide. The Devereux National Network is a leading non-profit organization providing services nationwide.

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Florida, a part of the Devereux National Network, was established in 1987 by invitation of Governor Graham, with the creation of the Intensive Residential Treatment/Specialty Hospital and Dual Diagnosis Center in Brevard County. The creation of this hospital helped Florida significantly reduce its use of out of state treatment facilities for children with severe behavioral health needs. Over the next generation, Devereux Florida continued to add a wide range of services and supports for individuals and their families.

Today, with nearly 900 employees throughout Florida, Devereux is one of Florida's most comprehensive child welfare and behavioral health organizations serving individuals with mental health, intellectual/developmental disabilities, and their families. Devereux Florida’s administrative office is located in Orlando with over 30 program locations providing services to children and families statewide. We touch the lives of more than 5,000 children each day and serve more than 13,000 families annually. Throughout our service continuum, Devereux has acquired vast experience and expertise in working with children and families with multiple needs, including those involved in both the dependency and delinquency systems.

Devereux Florida is licensed by the State of Florida Department of Children and Families, Agency for Healthcare Administration and Agency for Persons with Disabilities and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
