Devereux Pennsylvania - Adult Services program helps adults develop job skills, integrate into our communities

Devereux Pennsylvania - Adult Services’ Community Participation Services program connects adults with potential employers, as well as volunteer and community engagement opportunities.

The goal of this program is to help individuals build relationships and integrate into the community by working, volunteering or participating in educational, social or health and wellness-related activities.

“The adults we serve are highly motivated and incredibly loyal. They are looking for an opportunity to showcase their skills, and make meaningful connections and contributions, in their communities.”
 –  Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Pennsylvania –
Adult Services Executive Director Christopher Betts, M.A.

Devereux Pennsylvania – Adult Services’ Community Participation Services program connects adults with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences with potential employers, as well as volunteer and community engagement opportunities.

The goal of this program is to help individuals build relationships and integrate into the community by working, volunteering or participating in educational, social or health and wellness-related activities.

“While our adults are in the community, Devereux staff are right by their side, assisting and supporting them every step of the way,” Betts noted. “This program not only provides an opportunity for our individuals to learn essential job and social skills, but also for local businesses to gain hardworking employees who simply want to do a good job – and to be valued.”

Gaining real-world experience

Adults who participate in Devereux’s Community Participation Services program spend a few hours each week either working or volunteering at businesses and organizations, including supermarkets, book stores, retirement communities, libraries and animal shelters.

“We work with our individuals to determine their interests and needs, and then connect them with local businesses,” explained Devereux Pennsylvania – Adult Services Program Administrator Kirk Smith. “Adults can try their hand at a variety of tasks. For example, we partner with one organization where our individuals can volunteer in the kitchen one week, and then assist housekeeping staff the next. We want those in our care to develop the necessary skills and competencies to earn a paycheck and thrive in the community.”

What local businesses are saying …

Business leaders who partner with Devereux Pennsylvania – Adult Services say they are thrilled to provide employment and volunteer opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

“Collectively, the Devereux team works together to accomplish tasks, yet individual leaders have emerged. The adults who volunteer with us are easily able to identify chores that need attention, and quickly and efficiently complete those tasks through delegation and collaborative teamwork. The pride that is shown each day, after a job well done, is contagious! This partnership has been successful, not only for the individuals, but for White Horse Village and our residents.”
 – White Horse Village Director of Dining Services Margaret Hymerling

“We currently employ four dedicated Devereux individuals who play a key role in our dining services. Hiring adults with disabilities has broadened both the operational and leadership team’s perspectives on the unique strengths of each individual, and how those particular strengths benefit and balance our workforce. We also have learned about the importance of adapting our communication both in the message being relayed and the delivery of that message, as each person receives and interprets information differently.”
 – Metz Culinary Management General Manager Blair Asbury
