Devereux CA partners with Grace Fisher Foundation to foster growth, creativity in adults
Adults enrolled in Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health California’s Day Program are “brushing up” on valuable life, social and communication skills while attending art classes at the Grace Fisher Foundation’s Inclusive Arts Clubhouse. Each week, Day Program participants embrace their artistic side and engage in arts and crafts at the clubhouse located in Santa Barbara, California. “We are incredibly grateful to the Grace Fisher Foundation for providing the individuals we serve with this wonderful opportunity to tap into their creativity and learn new skills along the way,” said Devereux California Adult Day Program Manager Nellie Just. “Art is for everyone – no matter your age or ability. By participating in these weekly classes, our adults have an outlet to express themselves, connect with others, increase their self-confidence and self-esteem, and boost cognitive functions, such as attention and decision-making. Most importantly, they have fun.” Enriching lives through artDevereux California adults who attend art classes at the clubhouse are guided by foundation instructors who support them during the activities. “I begin each lesson by discussing the day’s theme or activity,” explained Grace Fisher Foundation Art Facilitator Sara Wilcox. “Recently, we studied Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space. The Devereux adults colored spaceships I had drawn – some even drew their own spaceships. During the class, we talked about Ms. Jemison’s many accomplishments as a doctor, engineer and NASA astronaut. As the adults worked on the activity, we also discussed the various tools we were using like paint sticks, markers, colored pencils and crayons. With each class, the response from the individuals is positive – they enjoy the lessons and activities and are always proud to show off their work.” About the Grace Fisher FoundationThe Grace Fisher Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities through music, art, dance and other forms of artistic expression. The Inclusive Arts Clubhouse, established by the foundation in 2023, offers free programming to empower individuals of all ages to unleash their creativity.
