School and Education

Devereux Ackerman Academy is a Cobb County Title 1 school, serving students in grades K-12. Ackerman Academy is accredited by Cognia (formally AdvancED). We provide a stimulating educational environment for children and adolescents while they are receiving the highest level of behavioral health treatment. Our school personnel are highly qualified and certified by Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Many of our faculty and staff have multiple certifications, including special education and other content areas. Our classroom environment and instruction are designed to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Our curriculum follows the Georgia Standards of Excellence, which adheres to National Common Core. We offer a specialized curriculum for college and career preparation. Ackerman Academy is the only Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility in the state of Georgia that is an official testing site for the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT).

Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools, allocating services and support to schools based on a student’s economic needs. With the additional support of Title 1, our students receive a quality education where they learn about the world around them and then see the impact their own actions have on the world.

As the parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school you are an important part of the Title I team. Your input is vital in the planning and implementation of family engagement programs and activities in our schools, as well as those provided by the district. The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic achievement standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background. Title IX Policy and Procedures

What is Title IX?Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct, which includes both sexual harassment including, but not limited to, sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment. This applies to academic, educational, athletic and residential programs.

What is Different? The new Title IX regulation holds schools accountable for failure to respond equitably and promptly to sexual misconduct incidents and ensures a more reliable adjudication process that is fair to all students. The Final Regulations specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination. They further specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination.
