Devereux’s dialectical behavior therapy poster contest helps youth utilize skills

Youth enrolled in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) programs across Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health recently participated in a poster contest to assist them in better understanding and utilizing DBT skills.

DBT, a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, is designed to help individuals manage their emotions and behaviors more effectively.

Staff from Devereux’s clinical and learning teams scored the posters on accuracy, organization and creativity. View the winning entries.

“We want to congratulate this year’s DBT poster contest winners,” said Devereux National Director of Behavioral Health Services Crystal Taylor-Dietz, Psy.D. “We asked individuals to create a poster that captured a DBT skill they have learned, and we received 12 entries from seven centers. Each winner received a gift card that can be used to purchase DBT resources, such as self-soothing items, or snacks for a party for their DBT group. We also awarded the first place winner a congratulatory banner that will hang in their treatment setting.”

Highlighting skills; generating excitement

DBT focuses on supporting individuals by teaching, reinforcing and coaching skills in four key areas:

  • Core mindfulness
  • Distress tolerance
  • Emotion regulation
  • Interpersonal effectiveness

“The ultimate goal of our poster contest is to help individuals reflect on, recall and utilize DBT skills. The posters can be placed in our individuals’ treatment setting or home,” Taylor-Dietz noted. “The contest also helps generate excitement about DBT. Our individuals have an opportunity to highlight what they have been learning and use some creativity in the process.”
