Faces of ASCEND: Meet Texas Lead Behavior Support Specialist Kimberly Zurborg

Thanks to ASCEND, Devereux Texas Lead Behavior Support Specialist Kimberly Zurborg is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in psychology.

When Kimberly Zurborg joined Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Texas in February 2023 as a behavior support specialist, she was looking to advance her career and felt that working at Devereux was her “calling.”

Zurborg excelled in her role, and after just 90 days of employment, she was promoted to lead behavior support specialist, helping youth with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and co-occurring mental health conditions, manage their emotions and behaviors more effectively.

“I love it here, not only for the career growth and development opportunities, but also the overall atmosphere,” said Zurborg. “The administration team, supervisors, nurses and other staff are welcoming and encouraging. Everyone makes it a point to let you know how much they value and appreciate you. This motivates all of us to keep doing what we are doing and remain focused on the individuals in our care – they are our top priority.”

An education journey

Throughout her career, Zurborg always dreamed of going to college. When she learned about the Devereux ASCEND Career Accelerator Program, she decided to turn those dreams into a reality.

With ASCEND's tuition assistance benefit, which provides team members with financial assistance to help ease the burden of continuing education, Zurborg is pursuing her bachelor's degree in psychology. Afterward, she plans to earn her master's in social work, while also becoming a licensed therapist. “I am a mother to a daughter with disabilities, and when it came to college, all of my time and finances were focused on her,” Zurborg shared. “After attempting to go back to school on three separate occasions, I stopped trying. With ASCEND, I am doing something I didn't think was possible.”

Zurborg encourages her colleagues who are thinking about participating in Devereux ASCEND to “just do it.”

“Devereux invests in its employees and provides us with opportunities to better ourselves and the organization,” Zurborg noted. “ASCEND is helping me earn my degree – and accelerate my career.”
