Golfing for a good cause: ‘Divots for Devereux’ raises $28,500 for Devereux Texas
More than 70 golfers demonstrated their support for Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Texas with every swing at the 20th annual “Divots for Devereux Golf Classic.” The event, held at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, generated $28,500 for Devereux Texas’ Autism Intensive Residential Program. The program serves youth, ages 6 to 17, with moderate to severe autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and co-occurring mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit disorder. “We could not have asked for a more beautiful day. A huge thank you to our golfers, sponsors and volunteers for their generosity and enthusiasm, and for making this year’s golf event a tremendous success,” said Devereux Texas Executive Director Pam Reed, M.S. “Each year, funds raised from this event are critical to ensuring we can continue to provide transformative care for those who need it most. ‘Divots for Devereux’ serves as a shining example of a community coming together to create positive change.” Funding Community-Based InstructionAfter the golf tournament, exclusive items, including a day of activities in Galveston, an autographed Super Mex Lee Trevino hat and gift baskets were offered via a silent auction. During a live auction, the organization asked for support to fund Community-Based Instruction (CBI). “CBI is an evidence-based practice that enables students to take what they learn in school and put it to practice in the community,” Reed explained. “With CBI, students learn the skills needed to achieve specific goals, such as riding in a van, going up and down escalators, buying on a budget and ordering food at a restaurant. Through the live auction, we raised $4,000 for CBI.” Up next: ‘Yawl Ketch the Spirit’ eventDevereux Texas is hosting its 21st annual “Yawl Ketch the Spirit … of Devereux” event also benefitting the center’s Autism Intensive Residential Program on Aug. 9 at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook, Texas.
