Overview

Devereux New Jersey’s vocational programs provide a continuum of services for more than 300 adults, ages 21 through lifespan, with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders and other emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences. These programs, which range from day habilitation, pre-vocational, vocational and supported employment, focus on each individual’s unique strengths and provide the opportunity to learn leisure and recreation, daily living and hands-on job skills. These programs are conveniently located throughout the state. Transportation is provided to and from day and vocational programs within a 10-mile radius. Virtual day programs also are available for all eligible individuals.

Day Habilitation Programs

Devereux New Jersey’s vocational programs, which range from day habilitation, pre-vocational, vocational and supported employment, focus on each individual’s unique strengths and provide the opportunity to learn leisure and recreation, daily living and hands-on job skills.

Our person-centered day habilitation program helps individuals gain the skills needed to become active and productive members of their communities. Participants work on customized and targeted goals to acquire skills related to: adaptive living, communication, arts and crafts, and pre-vocational and job training. In addition, this program helps individuals reduce challenging behaviors that may limit independence. Individuals have the opportunity to enjoy activities, such as cooking, health and fitness, arts and crafts, self-advocacy, and job and social skill-building with their peers and staff. Community-based learning experiences can include: shopping; sports and recreational activities; social events; community events and picnics; and visits to libraries and parks.

Pre-Vocational Programs

Pre-vocational services help individuals develop specific skills they can use to secure competitive, meaningful employment in the community. Adults acquire skills related to: following instructions; task completion; problem-solving and critical thinking; and safety precautions on the job. Services are delivered in a face-to-face setting either one-on-one or in a small group and can be delivered in program or in the community or on a job site. Individuals gain valuable and marketable skills, and have access to community volunteer placements to practice those skills before entering the workforce and becoming valuable contributing members of their local community.

Vocational Programs and Supported Employment

For individuals who want to enter the workforce, we provide services and training that result in paid employment in the community. Employment opportunities enable community inclusion, and each individual receives targeted, customized job placement and job coaching tailored to his or her unique needs, interests and abilities. Examples of supported employment services include: career planning and resume development; negotiation with prospective employers; job placement and development and job site analysis and support; ongoing job coaching and systematic instruction; and travel training to get to work and home.

Clinical Support

All individuals enrolled in a Devereux day or vocational program have access to ongoing clinical supports from our best-in-class clinical team, including highly-trained and experienced Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). Our team of BCBAs individualize behavior plans to help each adult achieve his or her career goals. In addition to our clinical expertise in our day program, every staff member is required to complete the Department of Developmental Disabilities’ DDD Overview Training, Medication and Administration Training, as well as our Preventing Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation Training. Devereux employees also participate in year-round ongoing education with our innovative learning team to stay updated on the latest care and treatment models. Every team member is CPR, first-aid and Safe and Positive Approaches (SP&A) trained as well.
