Dr. Barry McCurdy elected to APBS Board of Directors

Devereux Center for Effective Schools Director Dr. Barry McCurdy was recently appointed to the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS) Board of Directors. Dr. McCurdy was elected by his peers to serve a three-year term (2017-2020).

APBS is an international organization dedicated to promoting research-based strategies that combine applied behavior analysis and biomedical science with person-centered values and systems change to increase quality of life and decrease problem behaviors. In a letter congratulating Barry on his selection, APBS President Dr. Heather Peshak George said, “There was an outstanding slate of candidates running … and your election, therefore, is all the more impressive.”

As a Board member, Dr. McCurdy will, among other things, help further the APBS mission, respond to member issues, ensure fiscal and ethical standards, and actively participate in board and committee meetings. “I will have the opportunity to interact with individuals who are helping create and disseminate the science of behavior, which ultimately defines professional practice in our field.” Dr. McCurdy explained. “Devereux is a wonderfully diverse organization dedicated to serving individuals with the greatest need. Through representation on the APBS board, Devereux’s commitment to these individuals and to the implementation of positive behavior support – that is, the emphasis on prevention and evidence-based practice – is underscored.”

“We are thrilled Dr. McCurdy is being recognized on an international level with his election to the APBS Board of Directors,” said Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marilyn Benoit. “The Center for Effective Schools' work related to School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports makes Dr. McCurdy extremely well-qualified for this leadership role. I have no doubt he will do an excellent job representing the APBS and our organization.”

‘Improving the lives of others’

When asked how he feels about the board appointment, Dr. McCurdy said he is excited. “I will be able to help shape the future direction of a professional association dedicated to improving the lives of others – particularly individuals with disabilities. In addition, I hope to bring attention to the needs of other, non-traditional settings such as alternative schools and behavioral health programs – locations where the science and system-wide application of positive behavior support has the potential to positively impact educators, the children they serve and their families.”
