Lending a helping hand: Devereux Georgia volunteer logs more than 800 hours of service

Devereux Georgia volunteer Mary Prior has logged more than 800 hours of service since early 2018. (Pictured from left to right: Rudie Delien, Mary Prior and Regina Tamberino.)

As a volunteer at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Georgia, Mary Prior is combining her passion for helping others with her love of administrative and clerical work.

The retired U.S. Department of Defense registered nurse began volunteering in Devereux Georgia’s People Operations department, assisting with clerical/administrative tasks, in early 2018. Since then, she has logged more than 800 hours of service.

“I love volunteering because it keeps me active and gives me an opportunity to hone my computer and organizational skills,” Prior explained. “The staff is warm and welcoming, and I feel needed – and appreciated.”

Devereux Vice President of Operations Gwen Skinner expressed her gratitude for Prior’s service, noting, “We cannot thank Mary enough for selflessly donating her time and talents to support our staff and those in our care. Volunteers like Mary are an integral part of our organization, and clearly demonstrate what it means to be servant leaders by lending a helping hand wherever and whenever they are needed.”

A commitment to serve

Prior first learned about volunteer opportunities at Devereux Georgia through her friend, People Operations Recruitment Specialist Regina Tamberino, with whom she volunteered at a hospice center.

Prior works alongside Tamberino twice a week, helping Devereux Georgia’s People Operations team greet and process new hires, copy documents, and prepare benefits packets.

“Whether it is by alphabetizing paperwork, stuffing envelopes or proofreading documents, Mary is always ready and willing to assist in any way she can,” Tamberino shared. “She has even attended career fairs with me to promote Devereux Georgia’s programs and services in the community. Mary has a heart of gold and we are thrilled to have her on our team.”

Encouraging others to get involved

In addition to volunteering at Devereux Georgia, Prior spends time at a local hospital restocking refreshments and supplies. She encourages others considering volunteer work to get involved in their communities.

“There is nothing more rewarding than helping those in need,” Prior said. “Knowing I am providing some relief for Devereux Georgia’s People Operations team – by taking on administrative and clerical tasks so they can focus their efforts elsewhere – makes me feel good. I am truly honored to help.”
