How to Become a Foster Parent

You don’t need a lot of money, a big house, or higher education. Families or individuals interested in providing foster care are subject to an approval process. The main requirement is to have the ability and desire to provide the type of care needed by the child or children served.

You need to be able to:

  • Provide a safe, stable and caring home
  • Be open and willing to learn new parenting skills
  • Be realistic with your expectation of the individual
  • Be committed to working with the individual even with behaviors that may be challenging
  • Treat the individual as a member of  your family – ensuring they attend school, participate in recreation and cultural activities, attend medical appointments
  • Accept the individual as they are, and help them reach their full potential
  • Be a “partner” with the Devereux treatment staff

Some requirements to become a foster parent may be:

  • Attend an orientation
  • Complete 20 to 30 hours of foster parent training
  • Full background check (child abuse and criminal) and finger printing
  • A comprehensive home inspection to ensure child safety
  • First aid certification
  • Participate in a home study to review your readiness for fostering
