Students enrolled in the culinary arts program at Devereux Arizona’s Residential Treatment Center (RTC) are demonstrating their culinary craftsmanship.
The RTC recently hosted its fall culinary luncheon for families, staff and Devereux supporters. Students helped plan the menu, prepare the meal, set the tables and serve the food. Guests were treated to a salad, roasted chicken or balsamic glazed grilled flank steak, and carrot cake or a pumpkin brownie.
Students who successfully complete the 10-week culinary arts program, and are 16 years of age or older, are eligible to test for the Arizona Food Handler’s Card to prepare for future employment in the food service industry.
“What a wonderful event, our students were involved in every aspect of the luncheon and acted with the utmost professionalism throughout,” said Devereux Arizona Executive Director Yvette Jackson, LMSW, DBH. “Youth eagerly greeted guests and thanked them for attending. As servers, they were extremely attentive, frequently returning to the tables to check on guests, refill their beverages and manage other requests. Some other RTC students even provided entertainment, singing and dancing for the crowd. Our culinary arts program teaches students valuable life, job and social skills – and our youth have fun along the way.”

A tee-rific day!
One hundred golfers swung into action at Kimberton Golf Club in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, for the sixth annual “Tee-off for Autism” golf tournament to raise critical funds for Devereux Pennsylvania’s Bridge Fund.
The Bridge Fund helps adults with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities – served by Devereux Pennsylvania’s Community Adult Autism Partnership Program (CAAPP) – bridge the gap between high school graduation and adult programming to ensure there is no lapse in service.
The golf tournament, organized in partnership with longtime Devereux supporter T.J. Schneider, generated more than $6,000 for the Bridge Fund.
“We want to thank T. J., as well as our golfers, sponsors and volunteers for helping to make our annual ‘Tee-off for Autism’ golf tournament a success,” said CAAPP Program Director Kate Langston Rooney, M.Ed., BCBA, LBS. “The joy, camaraderie and community spirit that radiated throughout the tournament was a testament to our supporters’ unwavering commitment to our mission. This year, between the ‘Face-off for Autism’ hockey tournament in April and this event, we raised more than $25,000 for the Bridge Fund, which allows the adults we serve to continue to receive community, employment and behavioral services as they transition to adult programming. The Bridge Fund also sponsors a variety of social events and activities. This year, our adults had the opportunity to attend a Philadelphia Phillies game, a Philadelphia Eagles practice, tour Lincoln Financial Field where the Eagles play, and more.”

As a scholarship recipient, Murray will receive a complimentary registration to attend the 2024 PONL Annual Nursing Leadership Conference in Harrisburg in September.
“I am grateful and honored to receive this scholarship – it’s my first year serving as a member of PONL. I wanted to apply for the scholarship because it offers a wonderful opportunity to discover new ways to strengthen our nursing services,” said Murray. “I look forward to representing our organization at the conference and learning from, and networking with, nursing leaders from across the state. There is a need for community nurses in the field of behavioral health and representation is more important now than ever before.”
Murray, who joined Devereux Pennsylvania Adult Services in 2018, holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Penn State, as well as a master’s in business administration and a master’s in nursing with a certificate in healthcare management from the University of Phoenix. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in nursing executive leadership from National University.
We are grateful for our Devereux families!
Recently, a parent whose son receives services through Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island, wrote a note, praising staff and students following a group home outing to Canobie Lake Amusement Park in Salem, New Hampshire.
Look below to read her heartfelt letter.
“I have to praise Hillcrest staff and students. We joined them during their day at Canobie. All staff and students were welcoming and allowed us to share in on their fun. We experienced a whole day of smiles, laughter and memories. I also got to witness students using their coping skills to order ice cream for themselves. I felt so much joy and pride watching all the students do this! In a line that moved slowly, they used their patience to wait. … I stood back and watched as they each ordered their preferred selection, all independently after a quick check in from staff. My heart grew. I can’t thank you enough for the support you have provided to Riley and our family.” – Charissa Butterfield

Recently, students enrolled in the center’s West Side program visited Cornerstone Bank in Rutland, Massachusetts, to gain real-world banking experience.
“We want to thank Cornerstone Bank for collaborating with us on this hands-on activity. During the visit, students learned how to open a bank account, make deposits and withdrawals, write checks, and use the ATM – all critical life skills. I also want to thank Assistant Program Managers Laura Zuluaga and Simone Archer for organizing this valuable learning experience,” said Devereux MA/RI West Side Program Manager Tenasha Anderson. “Prior to the visit, students completed an activity where they learned about money management using play currency. By providing these opportunities for our students, we want to help them gain a deeper understanding of personal finances and financial responsibility, and grow confidence so they can handle their money matters down the road.”

Devereux Pennsylvania Children’s Services is nurturing the growth of students’ artistic talents.
Recently, students helped create a painting of a thriving tree, with the inspirational words “hope,” “purpose,” “growth,” “love” and “family,” that will hang in the lobby of the administration building on campus.
“My students and I have painted multiple pieces of installation art to brighten up buildings on campus,” said Devereux Pennsylvania Children’s Services Art Teacher Tina Zurcher. “My goal is to create pieces that promote positivity. I draw the design on a large wooden board and decide on a color scheme. During art class, each student helps paint a section of the board. After the board is completed, I apply resin to seal and protect the artwork. For this board, I chose a tree to symbolize strength, and I incorporated encouraging words to provide comfort to families who are considering enrolling their child in Devereux. I hope these reminders of what is important in life inspire everyone who visits the historic building.”

Students at Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island are immersing themselves in other cultures without needing to leave campus.
The center’s Westside residential program recently held its inaugural “Culture Day.” Students had an opportunity to experience Jamaican culture through presentations, food and music.
“We began the day by listening to the Jamaican national anthem before watching a slideshow presentation on different aspects of the Jamaican culture that one of our students proudly put together,” said Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island Westside Program Manager Tenasha Anderson, M.A. “We enjoyed delicious native foods, such as rice, jerk chicken, ackee and salt fish, curry goat, bun and cheese, and Jamaican beef patties, all prepared by our staff, while listening to classic reggae music. I want to give a special shoutout to my assistant program manager, Simone Archer, who is from Jamaica and came up with the idea of hosting ‘Culture Days.’ Jamaica was the first of many cultures we plan on exploring. This is a great way for our students to learn – and engage in – cultures different from their own.”

“The smiles on their faces said it all. Our individuals look forward to this event year after year,” said Devereux Pocono Executive Director Tina Skoda. “Many of those we serve never had the opportunity to attend a formal occasion. With ‘Night to Shine’ they get to experience all of the glitz and glamour in a safe, welcoming setting. This year’s event was one they will not soon forget.”
