Justin, who receives adult services through Devereux MA/RI, credits the organization with helping him learn new skills and thrive.

Justin also participates in Devereux MA/RI’s day program, noting that one of his favorite parts of the program is going off-site.

Among the New England Patriots and other sports memorabilia adorning the walls of Justin’s room at a Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Massachusetts and Rhode Island (MA/RI) group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, are certificates and awards, commending him on various life achievements.

“I’ve come a long way,” said the 35-year-old Justin, who was first served by Devereux MA/RI between 2008 and 2010. He now receives services as an adult. “Devereux helps me stay on track every day and be independent. Devereux has also taught me how to use my coping skills to stay safe.”

Devereux MA/RI Executive Director Nadyia Abbas, M.A., CAGS, LMHC, LADC-I, said Justin is thriving at Devereux, noting, “He has worked extremely hard during his time with us, acquiring valuable life skills that allow him to make healthy choices. Justin takes care of himself by eating nutritious meals, maintaining his personal space and regularly attending our day program where he continues to strengthen his vocational skills. Justin is a wonderful young man, with an impeccable sense of humor, who brings a great deal of joy to his housemates and our team members. We cannot wait to see what he accomplishes next.”

Achieving greater independence

Since moving into his group home in 2023, Justin has learned how to cook, bake and complete household tasks.

“I love living with my housemates and the good staff who work there,” Justin shared. “I exercise on the treadmill, do my chores, cook, bake and go to Cumby’s (Cumberland Farms convenience store) to purchase iced coffee.”

Justin also participates in Devereux MA/RI’s day program, noting his favorite parts of the program are “going off-site, doing Meals on Wheels and ordering out on Fridays.”

Goals for the future

In his free time, Justin enjoys spending time on his laptop and cheering on his favorite sports teams – the Fitchburg Red Raiders high school football team and the Patriots, of course.

“I like when they win games,” Justin said.

As for what the future holds, Justin hopes to eventually “get a job and become successful.”

Abbas noted, “Justin has already achieved success in so many areas – we know his future is bright.”
