Going for a spin? Devereux’s full-service Bike Shop offers bicycle repairs and sales

The Shops at Devereux’s Bike Shop, part of Devereux Pennsylvania - Adult Services’ vocation training program, repairs and services bicycles, and also sells refurbished bikes.

Looking to get back on your bike and go for a ride this spring? The Shops at Devereux’s Bike Shop, part of Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Pennsylvania – Adult Services’ vocation training program, repairs and services bicycles, and also sells refurbished bikes.

The Bike Shop, which provides employment and training opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is one of several specialized workshops that function as small businesses, producing goods and services for the public. Available services at the Bike Shop, located in Devon, Pa., include:

  • Refurbished bicycle sales
  • General bicycle repairs
  • Tuneup and detailing
  • Tube and tire replacement
  • Brake block/pad/cable replacement
  • Basic saddle replacement

“Whether you are looking to replace your brakes or tires, or purchase a refurbished bicycle, the Bike Shop has you covered,” said The Shops Program Administrator Kirk Smith. “All of our bicycles are donated by local colleges and universities, police departments and community members. The adults we serve gain real-world job experience by helping to repair the bikes. We have hundreds of bicycles ready for sale, including mountain, touring and road bikes. Plus, we can deliver! All revenue generated from the sale of these bicycles is reinvested into our vocational training program.”

Bicycle donations

Thanks to all those who donated bicycles to the Bike Shop in 2020, including Befitting Bicycles, Haverford College, and the following police departments: Birmingham Township, Collingdale, Eddystone, Marcus Hook, Phoenixville and Westtown Township.

“We are incredibly grateful to these businesses and organizations for donating their used bikes,” Smith shared. “All refurbished bicycles undergo an extensive and rigorous inspection and repair process before we sell them. Our Bike Shop team takes great pride in its work, and loves giving bicycles a new life.”

Partnership with Haverford College

Since 2011, the Bike Shop has partnered with Haverford College to get bicycles in need of repair rolling again. The Bike Shop fixes the college’s broken bicycles, and then sells them on campus.

“We had several garages filled with abandoned bikes and no way to dispose of them,” explained Haverford College Arboretum Director/Assistant Director of Facilities Management Claudia Kent. “Our students have always been interested in bikes, either for recreation or going to and from class. So, we had the issue of students, faculty and staff wanting usable bikes, and the college having bikes that were unusable stored in garages. Having the Bike Shop rehab the bikes provided a service at a reasonable price to students, and helped the college take care of its stockpile of unusable and unsafe bikes.”

In addition to offering bike sales, the Bike Shop holds “fix-it clinics” on campus, teaching students how to make minor repairs.

“There is nothing worse than wanting to get somewhere and your bike either has a flat tire or the chain has come off,” Kent noted. “These ‘fix-it clinics’ allow our students to take care of simple fixes without trying to find a bike shop – eliminating what could be a pricey fix.”
