What's Happening at Devereux California … September 2017

Devereux California Hosts Fiesta de Flamenco Event

Devereux California hosted its 17th annual “Devereux Day” event on Saturday, August 19. This year’s theme was Fiesta de Flamenco, and guests enjoyed a flamenco dance performance and other festivities, including a barbecue lunch, games, an art sale – including works of art created by our individuals – and a plant sale (all plants grown by the individuals we serve in our greenhouse). This annual event recognizes the individuals and families we serve, and allowed them to socialize in a safe and festive setting.

Devereux California Receives Two Grants from the Santa Barbara Foundation

Devereux California is the proud recipient of two generous grants from the Santa Barbara Foundation.

  • A $10,000 grant will assist with the funding of the new nurse call system for our Weisman Center for the Elderly. The Weisman Center is a residential service that we are currently upgrading to become a Devereux Specialized Regional Care Facility for the Elderly to provide more intensive medical care to seniors with significant health care needs and developmental disabilities.
  • A $1,500 Express Grant will assist with training and development of our dedicated Board of Advisors.

We extend our gratitude to the Santa Barbara Foundation for their generosity!

Devereux California Staff News

In Memoriam

The staff at Devereux are mourning the loss of one of our dear staff members, Tammy Cowie, program coordinator for our Supported Living Services Program. Tammy served nearly two years in this position. Tammy’s dedication, big heart and caring presence will be missed, and we extend our condolences to her family and friends.

Program Highlight: Adult Day program

Devereux California offers a state-of-the-art day program that address the diverse needs of adults with developmental, behavioral and physical challenges in safe, caring and supportive settings. The goal of our Adult Day programs (ADP) is to maximize personal growth, independent functioning and life satisfaction.

ADP serves Santa Barbara community members, as well as Devereux residents who are age 18 and over, and who are available on a full- or part-time basis. Our ADP offers warm, encouraging and stimulating environments in which participants can flourish and enjoy productive, meaningful and satisfying learning and recreational experiences.

The program also offers instruction and support for building prevocational skills. These include: dressing and grooming for work, working as a team member, responding to instructions, and staying on task. These, and many other skills, are taught in a learning environment with a model office and a computer lab. In addition, we offer opportunities to work in a café-type environment, greenhouse and farmers market. Volunteer opportunities in the community, such as working at the local foodbank, give participants real world experience to use their new critical work skills.

Board Member Spotlight: Pat Kistler

Devereux California Advisory Board member Pat Kistler, who is serving her second year on the board  brings many years of public relations, advocacy, community outreach and volunteerism experience to her role. As a board member, Pat’s roles include secretary and executive member of our fundraising committee.

Prior to joining our Advisory Board, Pat served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics for several years. In addition, she has served as the former president of the Santa Barbara and Ventura County Chambers of Commerce Alliance Boards; president of the Rotary Club of Carpenteria; and chair of the Carpenteria First Committee. She was the Government Relations director for the Carpenteria Valley Chamber of Commerce for eight years. In addition, Pat was recently appointed by the Goleta City Council to serve as a volunteer member of the County of Santa Barbara Library Commission.

Pat is always willing to lend a hand wherever we need her help. Thank you for your service, Pat!

Wish List: Our Adult Day program is in need of recreational equipment, computers, iPads and other learning tools to meet the program’s objectives for behavioral and vocational skill-building. If you are interested in donating, please contact program director Julie Badella at or call (805) 879-0306.

We currently serve more than 90 individuals in our residential facilities, and their own homes, throughout the Santa Barbara community – and that number continues to grow. Thank you to our Devereux families, individuals, staff, Advisory Board members, donors and all those who make it possible to continue the mission of our founder – Helena Devereux.
