According to the American Therapeutic Recreation Association, recreational therapy is a form of treatment that utilizes activities to help improve the physical, mental and emotional health and well-being of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions.
February is Recreational Therapy Month, and Devereux wants to highlight the impact recreational activities can have on youth and adults living with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences.
When done thoughtfully, recreational therapy engages all five senses, while providing a positive therapeutic experience,” said Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical/Medical Officer Yolanda Graham, M.D.
Devereux offers a wide variety
of recreational activities, which vary by state, and include:
- Aquatic therapy
- Board games
- Culinary classes
- Field games (e.g., softball, kickball)
- Fitness training
- Experiential (e.g., ropes course, climbing walls)
