Program Highlight: PBIS

Devereux California is implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (D-PBIS) throughout its center. D-PBIS is a values-based framework rooted in applied behavior analysis that emerged in the early 1980s as an alternative to escalating concerns over the use of using unpleasant stimuli for changes in behavior with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Today, that same technology is being applied to many different populations, young and old, as well as whole systems (e.g., schools, families) to produce more meaningful and sustainable outcomes. At Devereux, D-PBIS is the best way we know to “operationalize,” or put into everyday practice, our Advanced Philosophy of Care.

“D-PBIS is a wonderful model designed to support the needs of our individuals proactively, instead of reactively,” says Devereux California Behavioral Services Director Noelle Escovedo. “We want to set them up for success in new and creative ways! This requires intensive training for our teams in order to create a therapeutic atmosphere to promote growth and learning. We’re already seeing great improvements!”
