Advisory Board News and Announcements

On January 30, 2017, Executive Director, Gwen Skinner and Medical Director, Dr. Yolanda Graham, were presented with a donation from the proceeds of the Marietta Country Club ThanksGiving Golf Tournament held this past November. The contribution, presented by MCC Golf Committee members, Cec Dunn (also of the Devereux Georgia Advisory Board), Steve Fisher, Charlie Leonard, and Bill Dallas, will fund the Neurofeedback Therapy Program -- a FDA approved intervention designed to re-train the brain to function more efficiently. Devereux Georgia is incredibly grateful for Advisory Board and MCC members, Cec Dunn and Joe Glancy, who were instrumental in creating the partnership between the MCC and Devereux. Dr. Graham looks forward to the opportunity to treat more children through this additional treatment modality.

We are pleased to announce that Susan Nofi, Heidelberg USA’s Senior Vice President, Human Resources and General Counsel, and past president and long standing member of our Advisory Board, was recently inducted into Printing Industries of America’s Ben Franklin Honor Society. Ms. Nofi was inducted along with six other industry professionals on November 18th at its award ceremony in Kansas City, MO. The Ben Franklin Honor Society honors industry leaders who have made lasting contributions to advancing the printing and graphic communications industries.

Events and Campus Activities

Devereux is excited to be part of the Daffodil Project a worldwide project with a goal of planting 1.5 million daffodils in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and in support of children suffering in humanitarian crises in the world today. This past fall, several students planted daffodil bulbs in our first commemorative garden in honor and remembrance of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Recently, Andrea Miskewicz of the KSU Museum of History and Holocaust Education, visited Ms. Elizabeth Planos' class and shared an interactive Holocaust educational program. On March 22nd, students, staff, and guests, will participate in Devereux Daffodil Day events and dedication ceremony of our first commemorative daffodil garden. In the future, daffodil beds will be planted throughout our 40-acre campus.

Stock up on new books to support Devereux! On February 25th, 10:00 a.m. 2 p.m. Barnes & Noble, located at the Towne Center Prado, 50 Barrett Parkway in Marietta, GA, will be hosting a bookfair benefiting Devereux’s Ackerman Academy. If you can’t make it to the bookfair, you can visit BN.COM/bookfairs and support Devereux GA on-line from 02/25/17 to 03/02/17 by entering Bookfair ID 12092847 at checkout.

Found on the walls of nearly every room on Devereux’s campus are the words “Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Use Self Control.” These PBIS (Positive Behavioral and Interventions Supports) core expectations are part of the model used for achieving important social and learning outcomes. Clients move through the PBIS four-phase system based upon assessed risk level, level of support needed, demonstration of skills, and level of independence. Each day, clients earn points which are converted into “Devereux Dollars” which are used in the PBIS Reward Zone (campus Canteen) weekly to purchase tangible reinforcers such as journals, games, stuffed animals, snacks, etc. Mark Hirsch, LPC, BCBA, was recently designated as Devereux Georgia’s campus-wide PBIS Coordinator. According to Mark, one of the biggest rewards for many of our children is the ability for them to earn the privilege to go on supervised community outings. Gift cards to local fast-food restaurants are great motivators for children at Devereux. They work hard to exhibit positive and safe behaviors so they can enjoy off-campus activities. If you would like to contribute toward gift cards for our PBIS program, please contact Liz Bunder at
