What's Happening at Devereux California … May 2018

A note from our Executive Director Amy Evans

Families and Friends of Devereux,

Today, we eagerly await Governor Jerry Brown’s “May Revise” to the proposed 2018-2019 California State Budget.

While we do not expect many major changes to the budget proposal that was distributed in January, we are anxiously waiting for the Provider Rate Survey that is expected to be released to providers of intellectual and developmental disabilities services.

To recap, in the 2016 budget, Governor Brown included a mandatory Rate Study of all Developmental Disability Services Rates. Devereux California is excited about this study, as our system is underfunded and rates have been frozen for year. Our hope: That the study results will push the State Legislature and Department of Developmental Services to support a fair change in rates. The rate worksheets required for the study is a significant amount of work for providers (including Devereux California) to complete; however, we are committed to providing this information so that the Rate Study process can move forward in a timely manner.

Reaching out to legislators
Meanwhile, we are asking our legislators and our family members to connect with their local legislators to request support for a 4 percent rate increase for gap funding until the rate study is completed in 2019 and rates are evaluated.

Legislators respond well to families and individuals served. If you would like more information about how to get in touch with your local legislators along with details on the issues please contact me at or Wendy Cooper, manager of External Affairs, at

Devereux California Awarded $10,000 Grant from the Williams-Corbett Foundation

Devereux California is pleased to announce it was recently awarded a $10,000 grant by the Williams-Corbett Foundation of Santa Barbara.

This generous gift will provide much-needed operating support for the following programs: 1) Medically Fragile Program, 2) Supported Living Services Program, and 3) Enhanced Behavior Supports Program. These three programs provide individualized, high-quality care to those with cognitive and behavioral differences, some of whom require 24-hour support, in the Santa Barbara community.

Individuals in Adult Day Program Assist Coal Oil Point Preserve

In partnership with the Coal Oil Point Reserve, individuals in our Adult Day Program recently assembled work crews and helped remove pernicious, non-native plants from the preserve.

During this activity, our individuals had an opportunity to be part of a team that worked toward an important goal, while gaining work/volunteer experience. The day also promoted conservation and stewardship of the environment.

Pictured below are our individuals with giant beets they removed from the preserve to allow for native plant species to grow and proliferate. From left: Chip Prentice, Emilie Courtney, Chris Niro, Jose Castrejon and David Peterson.

Devereux California’s Greenhouse Featured in Edible Santa Barbara

The greenhouse on the grounds of Devereux California is proudly operated by individuals served by our Adult Day Program. As part of the program, participants learn daily living skills and/or vocational skills. Specifically, our greenhouse employees plant, cultivate and sell plants at local farmers’ markets.

We are excited to report that our Adult Day Program stand at the Goleta Farmer’s Market was recently featured in an article in the magazine Edible Santa Barbara.

‘An Evening in Italy’ Was a Huge Success!

We recently celebrated “An Evening in Italy,” an annual event featuring an Italian restaurant theme with pasta, music and dancing at the Goleta Valley Community Center. The community event served as a fun evening for the individuals in our care, as well as individuals served by other agencies and providers in the surrounding community.

“An Evening in Italy provides a rare opportunity to gather a broader population of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to socialize and have a wonderful time,” said Manager of External Affairs Wendy Cooper. “During the event, our individuals share a meal, celebrate with music and dancing, and bring together old friends, along with the chance to make new friends, broadening our community.”

Devereux California would like to thank its outstanding sponsors for this event, including: Albertson’s, Woodstock Pizza, McDonald’s, DJ Steve, and Pat Kistler of IBNKIST, Inc. We also would like to give a shout out to all of our amazing volunteers from the Rotaracts and Hampton Inn!

Below are photos from this year’s event.

A big thank you to the Rotaracts for volunteering to help with Evening in Italy!
