What's Happening at Devereux California … May 2017

Over the years, Devereux California has shaped its scope and focus to adapt to the needs in our community. These changes are a result of multiple factors, including the change in population, state and federal legislation, the increasing need for services, and other complex factors.

Nationally and locally, Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health is a nonprofit partner for individuals, families, schools and communities, serving many of the most vulnerable members of our society in the areas of autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, specialty mental health, and child welfare.

Devereux California will be opening a second home in the fall,  serving individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including those who experience significant challenges. In addition, the Weisman Center for the Elderly is transitioning into a more medically involved program.

Our Adult Day Program (ADP) and Supported Living Services (SLS) program are thriving. The ADP recently incorporated a pet therapy program that provides the individuals we serve with an educational opportunity to learn how to care for and interact with, pets, specifically dogs. Led by Devereux California Recreational Therapist Kelly Kanenberg, the program provides stimulation and physical activity, and our individuals are enjoying the program immensely. They simply can’t stop talking about it after Kelly and her canine companion leave the building.

We currently serve more than 90 individuals in our homes, and their own homes, throughout the Santa Barbara community – and that number continues to grow. Devereux California is moving into the future while staying focused on the present. We could not provide the services we offer without all of you – our Devereux families, individuals, staff, Advisory Board, donors, and everyone who makes it possible to continue the mission of our founder – Helena Devereux.

The Greenhouse

Remember to stop by the Devereux California booth at the Goleta and Santa Barbara Farmers Markets, where participants in our Adult Day Program sell succulents and herbs grown in the Devereux Greenhouse. The Devereux Greenhouse is also open for sales on Friday mornings, from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m., as part of our Adult Day Program.

This year's Devereux Days event will feature a flamenco dance performance by Angelica Vazquez and a flamenco guitar performance by Aaron Copenhaguen. The day will include a delicious bar-b-cue catered by Rincon Catering and will feature activities such as a photo booth, games, tours and other activities on the beautiful grounds of Devereux California. We hope you can join us for the fun and excitement. Devereux California Executive Director Amy Evans will be on hand to address the group and provide an update on the latest news and events. Attendees may also sign up to meet with our Financial Director Jennifer Pascoe, who will be holding 15-minute appointments for interested families and supporters, between 1–2 p.m. Please contact the Office of External Affairs at 805-879-0307 to reserve your appointment.

Art & Soul
January 2018

Under the leadership of Chair Sandra DePaolo-Vallejo, Devereux California’s 2017 Art & Soul fundraising event generated more than $10,000 to benefit the programs and services we provide to the community and the state. Our committee is already hard at work planning the second annual Art & Soul event, which will be held in January 2018. Please contact us if you would like to be added to the invitation list, are interested in being a sponsor of the event, or if you would like to donate an item to the auction.

For questions or more information, contact Manager of External Affairs Wendy Cooper at, or call (805) 879-0307.
