Doctoral Internship: COVID-19 Updates and Safety Procedures

Welcome to Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health’s Doctoral Internships in Health Service Psychology website! Through Devereux’s Institute of Clinical and Professional Training and Research, we offer several Doctoral Internships in Health Service Psychology throughout the greater Philadelphia region.

At Devereux, the health, safety and well-being of our interns, staff, individuals and families is our highest priority. Please look below to learn more about our program, recruitment and training updates, along with how we are protecting our staff and the individuals and families we serve.

Training program changes and updates

  • Interns will follow the same protocols as their training track’s clinical team regarding work location. Some training sites may ask that interns work remotely. The primary supervisor can provide more details regarding work location for an intern’s specific training track.
  • Didactic seminars, bi-weekly group supervision meetings with internship program staff, quarterly reviews, and other program meetings may be held via live video conference.

COVID-19-related safety procedures and protocols

Devereux cares for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex mental health needs, and traumatic life experiences, and often in congregate living environments. The behavioral health struggles and/or disabilities our individuals live with can make it particularly challenging for them to cope with and/or understand the challenges presented by COVID-19. Our dedicated staff members – our very own Healthcare Heroes – are taking special care to educate our individuals about healthy practices and precautions in a way that respects their unique styles of learning – and their understanding of the world around them.

Enhanced safety protocols

All Devereux centers have formal infectious disease and emergency-management plans – which were tailored immediately and at the start of the pandemic – to specifically address the unique aspects of COVID-19 prevention. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization, just a few of these precautions have included:

  • Enhanced regular and professional cleaning and disinfection across all campuses and sites
  • Implementing physical distancing protocols across all programs, whenever possible
  • The use of personal protective equipment including masks, gloves and gowns as indicated by the CDC
  • Daily temperature and symptom screening for all staff and clients
  • Telehealth programs launched as way to continue supporting our individuals and families remotely
  • Holding videoconference sessions to keep families connected and engaged throughout this time of modified visitor access

Please note that Devereux follows strict protocols if/when staff or our individuals experience COVID-19 symptoms. If staff experience symptoms, they will be required to quarantine at home for a 14-day period before returning to work, or until symptoms subside. If our individuals experience symptoms, we follow all quarantine procedures set forth by the CDC, WHO and health departments, including caring for these individuals in different residential buildings. Devereux will continue to closely maintain precautionary measures as recommended by the CDC and U.S. Department of Health to ensure we are doing our part to flatten the curve and keep everyone safe and healthy.

Recruitment and selection process updates

  • All interviews and information sessions will occur virtually. Candidates selected for interview will choose from one of five interview dates: January 4, 6, 8, 11, or 13.
  • Intern candidates will be asked to participate in a one-hour, live video conference with our internship program directors. The internship team will provide an overview of the program, as well as opportunities for candidates to ask questions. Prior to the video conference, candidates will be given access to a recorded, in-depth program overview.
  • Intern candidates will participate in a virtual interview with their selected training track on the same date as their overview session. Interview activities will vary by training track, but will include a meeting with the primary training track supervisor, and a Q&A session with the current intern.
