The Gift of Unlocking Human Potential

“I embrace each day and am very grateful that I have a good job, a nice home to live in, and amazing Devereux staff to support me.”

When Isaac sets a goal for himself, everyone around him knows that it is only a matter of time before he will accomplish it.

His employment journey also gave Isaac the opportunity to strengthen his social skills by exercising patience and professionalism.

Isaac’s wonderful Community Employment staff at Devereux are by his side every day to support Isaac at his job.

Isaac is proud to serve as an inspiration to his peers to motivate them to follow his example and find meaningful employment.

Courage is the ability to do something that is frightening and to show great strength in the face of adversity. Isaac is a remarkable man at Devereux who has shown tremendous courage throughout his life, no matter what challenges he has faced.

Touching the lives of over 20,000 individuals with cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges nationwide, Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health empowers adults like Isaac to balance independence and fulfillment with compassionate care.

Isaac and his siblings lived with their single mom during his early years. She worked hard to care for them but was often overwhelmed, and she sadly passed away when Isaac was still quite young. Thankfully, his wonderful grandmother, who had always been a very positive influence in Isaac’s life, stepped in to raise the children.

When Isaac was 22 years old, he lost his beloved grandmother and, in June of 2008, he came to live at Devereux. Isaac recently spoke about his grandmother, “I know my grandmother is my guardian angel and will continue to always watch over me to make sure that I do the right thing, work hard at my job, keep up with my cooking and cleaning and manage my money. I am very grateful for the influence of my grandmother and everything she taught me.”

Please consider making a gift to Devereux to help individuals like Isaac and others access high quality programs and services that inspire hope, ensure well-being, and promote meaningful life choices.

Isaac currently resides in a warm and spacious Devereux apartment with two other roommates, who all enjoy living together. Recently, Isaac has been able to increase his alone time in the community. This has enabled him to continue to become more independent and participate in some of his favorite activities such as bowling, going to the library, visiting some of his favorite local shops - all on his own, if he wishes to do so. Isaac is very health conscious and really enjoys preparing balanced meals and working out daily.

When Isaac sets a goal for himself, everyone around him knows that it is only a matter of time before he will accomplish it. Isaac worked diligently to identify his strengths and interests as he began to pursue meaningful employment. With this goal in mind, Isaac met frequently with his Devereux job coach to create his resume, visit various job sites, complete job applications and sharpen his interview skills. His employment journey also gave Isaac the opportunity to strengthen his social skills by exercising patience and professionalism.

Isaac’s diligence and preparation paid off as he finally received an interview at a doughnut shop. While he was not hired for the position, he used the experience to build resiliency and said, “I’ll brush this off and keep going!” After two additional interviews at various businesses, Isaac landed his first job as a crewmember at KFC.

“Every morning, when I am on my way to work, I tell myself: ‘Way to go, Isaac! This is a wonderful life you have. Live it well, live it fully!’”

His job responsibilities included food preparation and cleaning. Within a few months, he was thrilled to receive a promotion to cook and have his hours doubled. Isaac currently works 22-25 hours per week. As a direct result of his hard work and perseverance, Isaac has continued to impress his coworkers and supervisors, developing a valuable professional relationship with them. Isaac’s resilience, intelligence, strength and determination shines through in both his work ethic and disposition on the job. Not only is he an outstanding employee, but he has proven that he is a great coworker and friend.

Isaac’s wonderful Community Employment staff at Devereux are by his side every day to support Isaac at his job. This important program connects adults with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences with potential employers, as well as with other community engagement opportunities. The adults in the program are highly motivated, incredibly loyal, looking for an opportunity to display their skills and make meaningful connections and contributions in their communities. In turn local business owners gain hardworking employees who want to do a good job and be valued. Isaac recently talked about his dedicated Devereux staff, “I have so much respect for all of my community employment staff. I am especially grateful for my manager, Karen, and my head job coach, Miriam. They have done a lot to help me get my job, learn my job, and keep my job!”
