Therapeutic/Intensive Foster Care

Every child deserves a family.

Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island invites you to open your heart and your home to a child who needs your love and support.

There are hundreds of children waiting for caring families to welcome them into their lives. Through our Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) program, you can help.

TFC provides services for youth in state foster care, many of whom have emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences. The majority of the youth in our care are between 6 to 17 years old, however we provide services to youth from birth through age 22.

Our foster care services are specialized to meet the unique needs of these youth, and help them reach their full and unique potential. In caring for each youth, we emphasize teamwork and clinical excellence.

One of the greatest benefits of being a foster parent is that you can offer a better life for a child who needs hope for a brighter tomorrow. In addition, you will receive the following:

  • Tax-free weekly stipend
  • Extensive training
  • 24-hour on-call professional support
  • Up to eight days paid respite (Massachusetts only)

When birth families have reached their goals and are able to bring their children safely home, most of our youth are reunified with a birth parent. However, for those whose birth parents are not able to reunify with them, our foster families have the opportunity to offer permanency or support the youth in finding permanency through another plan. This may include:

  • Adoption
  • Guardianship
  • Independent living

Helping A Child Find His Voice

Sam spent most of his young life in Liberia. After coming to the U.S., he had difficulty transitioning. He had no schooling and trouble communicating. Sam had been with a state foster parent, who could no longer provide a home for him. That is when Tammy stepped in.

Tammy had been a foster parent with Devereux for several years. She knew about Sam’s case and offered to be a resource for him. Tammy found a way to understand Sam, even when he could not communicate his own needs. Tammy made him feel comfortable and safe, and he learned to adjust to his surroundings. Over time, Sam made great progress with his use of the English language and his studies.

Tammy and her family made the difference in Sam’s life. They helped him find his voice, and he will always be extremely grateful for that.

You can do it!

We are actively recruiting foster parents. Our dedicated professional staff will help every step of the way.

Rescuing A Child

Alex lost her parents at a very young age and she was wheelchair-bound. Her grandmother had difficulty caring for her. When Alex was 10 years old, her grandmother took her to the Department of Children and Families (DCF), and never returned. That day, DCF called Devereux to request an emergency placement.

Devereux contacted one of its foster parents, Janet, who agreed to care for Alex. The original plan was for Alex to stay with Janet for two weeks to determine if the home was a good fit. Weeks turned into months. Janet and Alex bonded almost immediately, and neither wanted the placement to end.

Janet’s neighbors were very welcoming as well. They helped build a wheelchair ramp with Janet’s family and were supportive of Alex and her needs.

Eighteen years later, Alex is a college and law school graduate. She is able to live on her own, but visits Janet often, that is, when she is not traveling or planning her next sky diving adventure.
