Join Devereux’s Institute of Clinical and Professional Training and Research for its 25^th annual Jean and Anson Beard Symposium on May 25 with featured speaker Dr. Gregory Hanley. A contemporary and trauma-assumed approach to applied behavior analysis (ABA) to assess and treat problem behavior in children with autism and developmental disabilities will be described. The values at the forefront of this compassionate and collaborative ABA approach will be emphasized along with the sequence of steps in therapeutic processes aimed at improving relationships en route to addressing problems of behavior.

Through lecture, interactive discussion and application exercises, the latest iteration of the practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment process will be conveyed. The procedures for maximizing the safety, televisibility and shared rapport of the process will be emphasized. The effective and parent-validated treatment process will then be described. Teaching contextually appropriate behavior following the shaping of communication and toleration repertoires will be described in detail. The relevance of several choice models for further minimizing risks and expanding the practitioner’s scope of practice also will be reviewed.

About the Jean and Anson Beard Symposium

Established in 1997 through the generosity of longtime Devereux supporters Jean and Anson Beard, the symposium offers a forum for sharing and discussing the most recent advances in the field of behavioral health.

At the end of this presentation:

1. The attendee will be able to describe the core components of Trauma-Informed Care.
2. The attendee will be able to describe the importance of a trauma-assumed ABA approach and describe three values that have implications for how to respond to mild and severe forms of problem behavior.
3. The attendee will be able to describe the practice of relying on synthesized reinforcement contingencies when functionally analyzing problem behavior and articulate the advantages of functional control over functional classification.
4. The attendee will be able to describe the tactics for conducting a safe, dignified, and trauma-assumed analysis of severe problem behavior.
5. The attendee will be able to describe the components of a skill-based treatment for severe problem behavior and how they connect to the core components of Trauma-Informed Care.

Gregory Hanley, Ph.D., BCBA, LBA
Dr. Hanley has been applying the principles of learning to improve socially important behaviors of children and adults with and without disabilities for over 30 years. He worked and trained at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, was degreed at the University of Florida, was tenured at the University of Kansas, and directed the Behavior Analysis Doctoral Program and Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University (WNEU).

Dr. Hanley has published over 100 book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals in areas such as the assessment and prevention of problem behavior, teaching tactics for young children, and evidence-based values. Dr. Hanley is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Div. 25), past Associate Editor of The Behavior Analyst, and past Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and of Behavior Analysis in Practice.

He currently serves as a Research Professor at WNEU, and CEO of FTF Behavioral, an international training and consulting group based in Worcester Massachusetts. This group of researcher-practitioners supports professionals attempting to create meaningful outcomes with practical functional assessment processes and skill-based treatments for addressing emerging and severe problem behavior, intractable stereotypy, food selectivity and mealtime problem behavior, and sleep problems.

Breaks: The course time listed includes a one-hour lunch and two, 10-minute breaks.
