Devereux New York Children's Services

Devereux New York provides a wide range of educational, clinical, residential and community-based programs and services for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences, and dual diagnoses. Our goal is to help the individuals we serve become positive, productive and socially-connected members of their communities. 

Devereux New York’s continuum of care for children and adolescents includes: 

  • State-approved education services: Our state-approved residential and day school, for children and adolescents – ages five to 21 – with behavioral healthcare needs, follows an individualized and multidisciplinary team approach to: 1) develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each student and family; and 2) ensure the development and achievement of customized goals.

  • Residential programs: Our residential programs serve nearly 100 youth, ages five to 21, with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, emotional and behavioral differences or multiple disabilities. We focus on encouraging individuals to reach their personal goals, as well as developing skills to increase independence in all areas of life. 
  • Community-based opportunities: Devereux New York offers pre-vocational and vocational opportunities – on campus and in the community – designed to promote the development of skills for future volunteerism and/or employment opportunities. 
  • Self-advocacy: Our student self-advocacy group – Students Who Advocate Group (SWAG) – helps individuals feel empowered by their hard work and proud of their accomplishments. SWAG meets twice a month to discuss student concerns and fundraising activities, and supports student events.  

Day school services

Devereux New York’s state-approved 853* residential and day school, for children and adolescents – ages five to 21 – with emotional, behavioral and cognitive differences, offers the following services:

  • Psychiatric, clinical and educational services
  • Speech and reading; occupational and physical therapy
  • Development of life skills; transition planning
  • Behavior management and family support services
  • Small classroom settings with certified special education teachers and teaching assistants
  • Clinical staff devoted to conducting behavior assessments and developing behavior plans
  • Ability- and affinity-based vocational opportunities within the school and in the community
  • Traditional school day schedule including adaptive physical education, art, music and library programs

*The New York State Coalition of 853 Schools was formed in 1991 to meet the growing needs of students with IEP diploma requirements.

Title IX Policy and Procedures

What is Title IX?Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct, which includes both sexual harassment including, but not limited to, sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment. This applies to academic, educational, athletic and residential programs.

What is Different? The new Title IX regulation holds schools accountable for failure to respond equitably and promptly to sexual misconduct incidents and ensures a more reliable adjudication process that is fair to all students. The Final Regulations specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination. They further specify how recipients (defined as schools, LEAs, postsecondary institutions) of federal financial assistance must respond to allegations of sexual harassment consistent with Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination.

As part of its continuum of care, the Devereux N.Y. Center for Autism Research and Education Services (CARES) – located in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. – provides year-round, full-day, intensive educational and behavioral interventions for students, ages five to 21, with autism spectrum disorders and other cognitive differences.

Residential programs

In collaboration with the individual, his/her family, and our treatment team, Devereux works to develop skills and build on one’s unique strengths, and fosters an atmosphere of safety and support as our youth work toward their set goals and objectives. 

Our individuals participate in recreational outings and focus on developing: life and daily living skills, socialization and leisure skills, communication and behavior management skills, and family engagement. 

Community integration

Our youth engage in regular vocational instruction geared to meet each individual’s IEP goals and foster a sense of community connection. Vocational opportunities are created in partnership with local businesses, and are supported and monitored by Devereux staff. 

In addition, our individuals participate in local community days, explore museums and parks, attend sporting events, shop at grocery/department stores, and dine at restaurants. By participating in these community-based activities, our youth: 1) learn safety, life and pro-social skills, and 2) become more aware of their community and the possibilities for the future.

School security

At Devereux New York, taking appropriate security measures on our campus is a top priority. Our team regularly reviews emergency preparedness activities and processes to ensure the safety of the individuals in our care. Click here to learn more.  

2017 Smart Schools Grant allocation information

The Devereux Red Hook School residential campus intends to use its Smart Schools Grant allocation to improve security by installing access control systems to its main entryways throughout its school campus buildings. This process will entail the installation of updated entryway doors and hardware to integrate with an access control system across our campus. 

This upgraded security system will:

  1. Provide staff with an access card to buildings/areas relevant to their jobs/roles;
  2. Provide staff with a system to manage access for employees remotely, as roles and access needs change;
  3. Include the installation of a video intercom system to allow for the remote opening of doors and monitoring of visitors to our campus programs. 

Our Red Hook campus currently uses a lock and key system, and an employee needs to manually grant access to visitors. By installing these upgrades, Devereux will increase security across its residential school campus, improve staff access to buildings, as well as eliminate risks posed by lost, misplaced or non-returned keys when an employee leaves tour organization. 

This project was developed after careful consideration and review of program needs, and includes input from a variety of stakeholders. Devereux New York is fortunate to have been provided with funding from the New York State Education Department in support of these security upgrades.
