Conference empowers Devereux’s emerging leaders to put Servant Leadership principles into action

As Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health begins embedding Servant Leadership best practices across its organization, the nonprofit is making sure it has the right people in place to roll out this new initiative – and ensure the long-term success of this methodology.

Recently, more than 30 emerging leaders throughout Devereux – selected as Servant Leadership Champions – gathered for two days of intensive training on how they can help drive and sustain Servant Leadership efforts across the nonprofit’s 13 centers. These leaders will observe, guide, instruct and monitor center practices to ensure they are aligned with Devereux’s Servant Leadership philosophy.

The “Servant Leadership Champions Conference” – held at the organization’s headquarters in Villanova, Pa. – featured discussions with Devereux President and CEO Carl E. Clark II, Devereux Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and Servant Leadership Committee Lead Dr. Rhea Fernandes and Patricia Falotico, CEO of the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. Note: Servant Leadership, a term coined by Greenleaf, is a philosophy and set of values and practices that enrich the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world.

Champions vital to implementation

Devereux’s Servant Leadership Champions walked away from the conference with valuable information on how to engage team members, and generated ideas and activities for implementing Servant Leadership best practices at their respective centers.

“Our Champions are vital to the implementation of Servant Leadership principles at Devereux,” said National Director of Learning and Organizational Development Mary Imbornone. “Our hope with this initiative is to empower employees to voice their opinions and bring new ideas to the table. By listening, and taking action on employees’ ideas and innovations, we will boost employee engagement and retention, and enhance overall outcomes for the individuals and families we serve.”

What Devereux’s Champions are saying …

Conference attendees said the meeting equipped them with the knowledge, skills and drive to return to their centers ready to support the implementation of Servant Leadership at Devereux.

“The conference was an exciting kick-off to what will surely be a transformative time in our organization’s history,” said Devereux Texas Director of Business Development David Roberds-Roach. “My greatest takeaway was that we have a strong cultural foundation with many elements of Servant Leadership already in place. At the same time, Servant Leadership presents us with new opportunities to evolve strategically, and challenges each employee to adopt practices to enrich those around us every day.”

“To see the dedication, passion and commitment from everyone in attendance was truly inspiring,” said Annalee Marshall, program director at Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island. “It’s an honor to be part of something that I believe will have a huge impact on our organization, and the individuals in our care.”
